If David Lynch and David Cronenberg teamed up with Werner Herzog early in their careers and made a movie together says Twitch Film, it would have been Calvin Lee Reeder's The Rambler. Dermot Mulroney stars as an ex-con just released from prison, kicked out of his trailer home, and gone on a cross-country journey to his long-lost brother's pony ranch. But along the way, he'll encounter a depraved American underbelly of dusty towns, bizarre strangers, sudden violence, and a device that can record dreams onto VHS. Lindsay Pulsipher and Natasha Lyonne co-star in this surreal Sundance sensation about shadowy pasts, questionable futures, and the deadpan travelling man known only as the Rambler. This is definitely a more bearable film than "The Oregonian", which I had the pleasure of seeing from the same creator. I must say that I enjoyed it much more because the images make more sense and there are quite pleasant actors, interesting locations, and especially interesting scenes. Yes, it's still a mind flush, but it has the right emphasis, it gets under your skin. Either you accept the whole aesthetic and logic and "The Rambler" strongly gets under your skin, or you just let it be and let this film float around you without influencing you in any way. As a fan of gore, I must applaud Reeder's naturalism. ()
Calvin Reeder knows the craft and does things his way (just like in The Oregonian). Some will like it, others won’t, but for me, these psycho-surreal corners of cinema remain a forbidden country. ()
