Francesco Rosi established himself as one of the greatest chroniclers of Italy's stormy postwar history with such riveting classics as Salvatore Giuliano, The Mattei Affair and Illustrious Corpses. Three Brothers explores similarly knotty social and political territory through the seemingly straightforward story of three siblings returning to their native southern Italy to pay homage to their late mother. However, their various professions a judge in Rome (Philippe Noiret), a spiritual counsellor in Naples (Vittorio Mezzogiorno), a factory worker in Turin (Michele Placido) have a profound effect on their response to this reunion. angol It touches on many a burning topic for (not only) Italy (not only) in the eighties, but nothing comes of it in the end, nothing is discussed to the end, it goes nowhere. It would have worked better as the introductory episode to the series, but even so, it’s high quality enough as it is. Only in the end it is about nothing, however much it tries to be about almost everything. ()

angol A typical example of a movie where a high percentage rating is given by only a small group of reviewers. This really isn't a movie that could break box office records and belongs to the category that I call noble artistic boredom. It has a very slow pace and no progression. If I compare this dull affair to Il Divo by Sorrentino, then the latter represents a directorial gem, an explosion of creativity and a case where the screenwriter forces you to think about what you've seen and, above all, doesn't bore you at all. The film may have a luxurious cast and a topic that calls for high praise, but its execution simply does not convince me. It wanders from nowhere to nowhere and you will forget about the film soon after. This is an hour and three-quarters of film contemplation that could have been shot much more dynamically and interestingly. Overall impression: 45%. ()

angol What I must appreciate about this film, besides the excellent performances and scenes with the elderly, is how well the director chose the form and how he inserts scenes into the story that seem almost dreamlike, scenes of how everything could have been if... As a plot element, it is very interesting and now and then it pulls you out of boredom. ()
