Probably the first sci-fi sitcom I’ve come across. And that’s why I watched it from the beginning to the end. The Good Place is a total chill-out. In addition, it helped my fill the gap where no good new sitcoms are produced, and the TV constantly play reruns of the classics, that is Friends, HIMYM and The Big Bang Theory. In addition, these are still the most watched afternoon shows, which probably says something about their quality. But The Good Place has a chance to reach similar level. It is not possible to offer as much content, as it only has four series in total, but on the other hand it confirms the rule that less is sometimes more. I had a great time and even though some episodes are weaker, in the overall context of the fact that something is happening in each episode, pushingthe story forward, even if sometimes it’s with crazy plot twists, The Good Place is a good series for chill-out, which you might even find yourself binge-watching for a whole evening. Season 1: After a long time, a sweet, pleasant, refreshing, and restful series which boasts a very cleverly written script from an unconventional setting. Although I had quite tough moments during the first three episodes and was afraid I wouldn't get into it, as time went on, I was watching almost every day and enjoying the undemanding episodes. The humor is not very characteristic, rather it's a kind of amusing fantasy. The main ingredient here is morality, which for some may be slightly annoying because this series sometimes really feels like it's for children, but so far I like it and definitely want to see it through to the end if the quality remains the same, if not better. Season 2 has an interesting concept as the first season essentially "reset" and this one offers a completely new beginning. This was also a source of my concerns because I wouldn't enjoy it if it followed exactly the same paths again. Fortunately, the creators managed to surprise and I dare say that the second season is probably the best, funniest, and most interesting qualitatively. Additionally, the characters also become more interesting and I definitely liked them even more. I would say that the second season offers more humor and was definitely the one I binge-watched the fastest. Season 3 came up with an idea that is starting to evoke a feeling of twice-boiled tea from the same tea bag. The story is quite predictable and the script is essentially rehashed with slightly different elements. Unfortunately, this season is probably the most boring and dragged out. The bright moment, however, was when Maya Rudolph appeared on the scene as a funny judge. She definitely adds plus points to it, and I loved all her references to the TV show environment. Anyway, I'm not giving up on this series yet, but it would need a little pick-me-up. Season 4 may be a tad better than the third, but still slightly forgettable. The new characters rather spoiled my impression, although I understand that it was a way to introduce a new concept to the series. All in all, though, "The Good Place" is still a very interesting series that warms the heart and fills the empty quarantine moments that you will be happy to remember. I would certainly be glad to discover a similarly good series on Netflix again someday. ()
Although it wasn't love at first sight, the unusual concept slowly grew on me, and after a few nice episodes, some character quirks and bugs in the main cast stopped bothering me and it all worked. The whole afterlife setting has one huge advantage. Eleanor and the gang venture into uncharted territory within the sitcom waters, developing mysterious plots and authentic cliffhangers that aren't just about relationships, contrary to genre conventions. I honestly don't know if I've ever experienced this with a comedy before, returning to it at least initially not because of the style of humor or good mood, but out of curiosity about where the whole universe of good and bad places will delve into this time. And these excursions in later seasons are the most surprisingly rich treasury of clever humor. The brilliantly repeated jokes (butchering Chidi's last name, Tahani and her acquaintances, or ANYTHING that comes out of the irresistible Janet in any form) are a very sweet cherry on top. Jason's constant hardness is what mostly holds back my complete enthusiasm. That type of humor doesn't quite fit into the otherwise increasingly precise mosaic. However, it is a very clever ride that knows how to deliver the most essential comedic trick: to induce tears both of laughter and emotion. ()
