The atmosphere of Dani de la Orden's film reminded me a lot of the Italian film Remember Me?, which also relied on an unconventional romantic line that was mixed with the issue of (incurable) illness. The comedic side of the film worked quite well for me - especially thanks to the character of Saúl, whose story also provided a solid dramatic interlude. I also enjoyed the character of Marta. The leading couple was likeable throughout, but the romantic storyline felt overly cheesy and American at times. In any case, this is a nice film to laugh at, but also to think about. ()
Crazy About Her gave me major 50 First Dates vibes, but while Adam Sandler knows how to keep things entertaining, this one leans more on the story side. The movie starts strong—there’s a club scene, a quirky girl, and it seems like every Spanish woman has bangs, so if you’re into that, you’re in for a treat. The highlight of the first scene is a wild party with the quirky girl and a guy dancing to "Tell Me Why" by Supermode, which sets the stage for what could’ve been a really fun comedy. But once the story shifts to the mental institution, it becomes a bit more average. It’s not a waste of time, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that it was missing those laugh-out-loud moments that make a comedy truly memorable. ()
It's nice when someone can turn a serious subject into an enjoyable comedy. Plus, I can't help but think nothing sounds as good in movies lately as Spanish. I feel like the crazier a character gets with that language coming out of their mouth, the better and sexier they sound. Usually Spain makes me hot, but in this case I have to admit that I ended up being quite disappointed. The film does have a few strong moments that I really enjoyed watching, but as a whole it doesn't overwhelm the viewer. The plot is basically a drag lacking any kind of surprise or anything that you would think you weren't expecting. It just flew by, ended, and I don't really understand when the two managed to fall in love. Because I don't feel like I was there. 3 stars. ()
The film has a rather nice idea about a man who volunteers to be admitted to a psychiatric ward for a woman he's fallen in love with after the first night, but signs a contract and can't get out and the woman doesn't seem too interested. At times I was hoping the Spaniards would ride the successful wave of Toc Toc – the characters are similar, after all – but the humour here gies absolutely sideways. The most amusing character is the lady with Tourette's syndrome, but the rest of the patients are woefully underused. It's a shame that instead of comedy, the film focuses more on romance, drama and emotion, which I'm definitely not looking for. It’s alright, but could have been better. 5.5/10. ()
