In een kleine Franse gemeenschap in 1870 staat Rosalie (Nadia Tereszkiewicz) op het punt te trouwen met Abel (Benoît Magimel), een café-eigenaar die diep in de schulden zit. Rosalie is een jonge vrouw met een geheim dat haar leven overschaduwt; ze is geboren met een extreme vorm van lichaamsbeharing. Haar vader heeft om haar huwelijkskansen te vergroten een aanzienlijke bruidsschat gespaard. Abel, eigenaar van een café bij een fabriek, trouwt met Rosalie zonder kennis van haar geheim, aangetrokken door de belofte van financiële verlichting van zijn schulden. In hun huwelijksnacht schrikt hij van haar uiterlijk en wijst haar af. Rosalie wil niets liever dan getrouwd blijven want het is haar diepste wens een kind te krijgen. Om Abel te helpen met zijn schulden, besluit ze haar baard te laten groeien in de hoop dat dit nieuwsgierige klanten naar zijn bar zal trekken. De dorpelingen gaan al snel van Rosalie houden – vooral de meisjes in een lokaal weeshuis, die haar bewonderen. Maar Abel blijft worstelen met zijn gevoelens en de angst voor veroordeling door anderen. Na een ongeluk in de fabriek keert de stemming in het dorp zich tegen hen. Rosalie, standvastig en veerkrachtig, laat zich niet ontmoedigen door de negatieve opmerkingen maar haar relatie met Abel staat op het spel. (Cherry Pickers Filmdistributie)

Film festival in San Sebastian, film number 1. Japanese animated film definitely didn't attract me at the beginning of the festival, so the clear choice, on the other hand, was a French historical drama in the title role with a Polish version Lili Reinhart. I had no idea what it was about, I didn't read the content beforehand, and that's why I was surprised. The French always go with the times, so they made a film that, while reaching back to the 19th century, fits exactly thematically into the present. The theme of differences, unjust condemnation of the majority, fight for one's own dignity, as if someone had cut out of France, the Czech Republic, or any other state of today. The subject is relevant, but it needed some adjustments and enrichment of the screenplay, the film presents two dramatic scenes, in the rest it somehow sails through and does not evoke too strong emotions or rich thought processes. The acting is very well done, Magimel always fit such roles, Guillauma Gouixe I haven't seen in a long time, so I mistakenly confused him with the emaciated Menochet. For the first time, I had the opportunity to see Benjamin Biolay, who in my opinion dominated in supporting roles. So a pretty good start to the festival...

An intimately off-kilter but likeably original idea rendered into a rather traditional melodramatic cliché about society’s inability to accept otherness in its ranks. And about a couple who find kinship as they struggle with provincial obtuseness. The French are not afraid of anything. If the courage of the director/screenwriter had been applied also to the unexpected and appropriately shocking conclusion of the story, the film would have left a more substantial mark on the festival scene.
