W.E.

Highly romantic. From the first shots you can't help but notice that it was shot by a woman. It's emotional, touching and heartfelt; very personal. The melodramatic interweaving of two time planes is interesting, distinctively crafted, including the final subtle blending and realisation. Perhaps too dreamy and out of touch with reality (visually, however, incredibly opulent), but I get the feeling that this is exactly how Madonna wanted to make it. Timeless, iconic; these stories never get old. (12.06.2016)

Madonna may be a decent singer, but she should never have sat onthe director’s chair. This movie isn’t good. It’s a sort of romantic hotchpotch with bad editing and weird camera. I had no idea what was going on in the movie for the entire two hours. I only noticed that otherwise good actors portray some dull characters who are in love but whose love is forbidden. A true romantic tragedy. (08.03.2019)

This emotional film is based on the idea of intertwining two destinies. And we also learn something more from Wallis and Eduardo's biography. It was no coincidence that Madonna developed the qualities of Abbie Cornish, which Jane Campion had already recognized in Bright Star, another unusual melodrama from the recent past. The idea of W.E. is simply charming. And, of course, inspiring. One of the messages of this film could be about not letting your dreams be taken away (and not letting yourself be manipulated). Then there are the costumes, as authentic as they could be, and Madonna's song "Masterpiece," which was very fitting for the ending. I have no objections and will be happy to explore the W.E. topic further. (11.02.2019)
