Catherine Hardwicke continues to prove to us that even at nearly 60 years old, she is capable of directing films about youth for young audiences, whether it's drama, fantasy, vampire romance, or thriller genres. She wants her films to look sexy, gritty, bold, and youthful. Emily Browning again looks like an entirely artificial doll. Hardwicke believes she sees into the souls of the young, but actually, she doesn't know what she wants to tell us. Is it a confession of today's era, or just a pseudo-stylized thriller? The film is a beautiful example of modern kitsch that plays at morality but itself doesn't know what morality is. It wants to showcase decay but it is a part of it. It wants to show hope, but at the same time, it screws it up with a silly plot. ()
