According to popular myth, when old elephants feel they are about to die, they move away from the herd and travel alone to an ancestral land to end their lives and avoid being a burden on the younger and stronger elephants. Carlos Casas takes this traditional folklore as his starting point and creates an immersive, contemplative, and haunting film centered on this journey. He takes you through the different stages of a trip that becomes more and more “trippy” with the passage of time. Divided into three segments, it starts off as a more classic observational film and moves more and more into the unknown, not only in geographical terms but also in cinematic ones. In the last part, the whole film is a symphony of sounds and dark images that includes a passage through a storm in the middle of the jungle. Cemetery is an unforgettable experience you can only watch on a big screen. This is, of course, a film about memory, colonialism, religion, and traditions passed down the generations, but also a strange type of adventure story, one that happens not in front of us but around us. An adventure for our senses. (Viennale)
