Garry Phillips studied at Queensland University in Australia, graduating as a surveyor and then returning a few years later to pursue an Arts degree. After completing the latter, he joined a production house and worked in various crew and camera capacities before commencing his work as cinematographer.
Among the feature films that he has been director of photography on are Jonathan Teplitzky's Better than Sex and Gettin' Square; Samantha Lang's The Monkey's Mask; and Neil Armfield's Candy, which world–premiered at the 2006 Berlin International Film Festival, starring Heath Ledger, Abbie Cornish, and Geoffrey Rush. Mr. Phillips' project as cinematographer is Darren Ashton's Razzle Dazzle: A Journey Into Dance.
