When a rival clan launches a revolt against the Taira in 12th Century Japan, Lady-in-waiting Kesa (Machiko Kyo) agrees to act as a decoy so the nobles can escape. Escorting Kesa's carriage, samurai Oritoh Endo (Kazuo Hasegawa) battles his way through the enemy, only to discover his brother has joined the rebel forces. Rushing to inform his Lord of the uprising, Moritoh joins the loyalist forces in quashing the revolt. Offered whatever he wants as reward, Moritoh chooses to have Kesa made his wife. But Kesa is already married, to Wataru Watanabe, a cultured official in the guards. Undeterred, Moritoh pursues her, besting her husband in a horserace and then challenging him to a duel.
