angielski The main hero has to search for a way from the bottom to the top, the main heroine has to be a rich, determined, and sensitive beauty, the friend has to fail to understand the hero's motivation, and the love rival has to be a cunning villain. The music is monotonous and the story is insanely formulaic with a serious, but completely senseless and unnecessary twist. The whole "street adventure" storyline is also filmed so routinely that at times I almost prayed for this debut director to get a do-over at a special ballet R'n'B crossover. Bad, bad, bad. And the worst part is how many people are still enthralled by such pieces. ()

angielski Dance films generally have one basic problem. The dance elements are excellent, but the story is somewhat lackluster. Dirty Dancing could only be one, and even it isn’t perfect from a screenwriting perspective. Nevertheless, it addresses interesting issues. Step Up is a film that somewhat attempts to build on Dirty Dancing. It aims to tackle not only the joys but also the struggles, with some issues so fundamental that they literally revolve around questions of life and death. However, at its core, it’s still the same: a romantic film set in a dance environment. This isn't surprising, though. A good script is not expected from a dance film; the dance numbers themselves should be what elevates the film. The initial concept of Step Up is good. It should be about a combination of ballet and street dance. As I said, it’s a very interesting idea, but the execution falters a bit. The problem is that the storyline comes at the expense of the dance numbers. The main dance number is, of course, in the finale, but even that feels somewhat short and ultimately a bit unsatisfying. I think it's a shame. If there had been more dance, I believe the film would have gained the right energy. The issue is that it lacks the sexual tension that dominated Dirty Dancing. The relationship between the main characters is perhaps overly romantic with classic obstacles, which is simply a cliché. When a film offers little dancing but is supposed to be a dance film, somewhere there seems to be a mistake. ()
