A classic Hollywood film that helped with coping with two world wars. Olivia de Havilland won her first Oscar for playing a woman who was indelibly shaped by war. In the first war, she met the father of her illegitimate child, a pilot who was later killed. And in the second, she had to follow the fate of her son, who had also enlisted... Both father and son are played by John Lund and, strangely, it's not distracting at all, because the make-up artistry of the time was at a great level. The fascinating life vicissitudes of a pharmacist's daughter depict a successful woman in later years with a secret that affects her entire life. It is interesting to see how post-war Hollywood tried to portray the differences between the euphoria of war, the post-war heyday, and the uniformity of the last days of the war. ()
Olivia de Havilland delivers such a performance that you even wish for a happy ending, which only happens when actors manage to draw you into their characters. Olivia de Havilland drew me in and I liked the narrative style, which is retrospective, building up the atmosphere for the finale. ()
