Another Marvel series, Moon Knight brings something different to the table, but that doesn't mean it's bad. The first two episodes promise a lot, but as the series progresses, it leans more towards a children's tale than an action-packed thrill for adults. Despite this, Oscar Isaac brings so much to the character that it remains engaging. You can't help but enjoy it, even when you realize that Isaac's biggest enemy is often himself rather than any external threat. ()
A hippo, a crocodile and a bird walk into a bar and a fight begins... Moon Knight is slightly different from what you might expect. Which on the one hand is fine and on the other is really bad. The violent and bloody potential is approached rather naughtily. We do get dead bodies and bloody slaughter, but unfortunately the killing happens in a flash, so the viewer misses everything and just gets to see the hero with a pile of dead bodies around him, looking in bewilderment at his blood-covered hands. But the storyline with the changing personalities peaking in the psychiatric hospital is excellent. Unfortunately the quality of episodes isn’t balanced. The ones directed by Diab lack oomph and the scenes roll out, like on a conveyor belt. Conversely, Moorhead and Benson are playful, surprising and they add the oh-so-important atmosphere of chaos and uncertainty. Isaac was excellently cast; the only problem I can find is the way Spector turns soft in the final episodes. It’s easy to watch and, yes, unexpectedly rough for a Disney; Moon Knight had as much potential as Deadpool, but they failed to take full advantage of it. But it’s a good watch, all the same. ()
It has to be said that this is far from a conventional Marvel story, because there is not a single reference, clue or other character, and as it is customary with this brand's series to connect the characters, we don't see anything here. But it makes me all the more curious to see how, if ever, Moon Knight will connect with the other series. The first two episodes played out an extremely engaging storyline with a great main character, played by Oscar Isaac (and in both of the main character's distinct personalities). Unfortunately, the villain is weak, with questionable motivations, and the next four episodes took a completely different path than I would have liked. It's as if it lacked balls, a more engaging use of the whole Egyptian mythology, deities and especially the Moon Knight (who was in all of three scenes?), and as if the creators, after a great start, didn't know what to do with the material next and how to bring it to a successful end. Bad? Probably not. I don't regret my time, but I was expecting a bloated, action-packed addition to the Marvel family and got more of a fantasy tale for teenagers. ()
I really enjoyed this series a lot. The Jekyll-and-Hyde horror vibe mixes very naturally with the adventure more in the style of The Mummy than Indiana Jones, but it's still Marvel, so there's no shortage of humor (pleasantly dark at times) and action (imaginative thanks to something I won't reveal). The final two episodes and the very end then made Moon Knight something more than just another comic book adaptation, and made the main character one of the most interesting in the MCU, which I hope the lords and ladies will capitalize on. If they don't, it would be a real shame. ()
I have no relationship to the comic book source Moon Knight as a Marvel fan, so I was just waiting to see what would come out of it. In the end, I appreciate the complete detachment from the MCU, although those cheap references sometimes annoy me. The series ultimately didn't surprise me as it turned out to be a purely routine matter, which also irritated me with its shallow CGI in the first episode. Although I found it somewhat enjoyable in the following episodes, it's definitely not something I would ever need to see again. And I don't want a second season. I'm not a big fan of Oscar Isaac, but he didn't particularly bother me here, same with the main villain Ethan Hawke, who is definitely a good actor, but his character is not particularly interesting. A weak seven and I'm still being very generous. ()
