Who would have thought in 1991 that a kid like Macaulay Culkin would end up on drugs as an adult? The more I watch his childhood movies, the less I understand. I can’t imagine where you could find a more adorable child for a movie than he was in the 1990s. This movie was otherwise a standard heartbreaking story; nice to see once, but I wouldn’t want to stare the reality in the face the second time. ()
The last twenty minutes are very good, a perfect portrayal of the complex themes of mortality and true love from a child’s perspective (the sequence from the first kiss to the beehive is especially charming), but the rest didn’t move me at all. The actors are very nice and there is some effective humour, but most of the story keeps the viewer at arm’s length in terms of emotions and realism; everything happens too fast and without proper psychological foundations. But the premise is really beautiful and if Rob Reiner had directed it, we would have a much more magical and addictive classic. 70% ()
