Tribes of Europa, February's most anticipated series is finally out and, even though I was expecting a much bigger smash, it's still very decent and entertaining post-apocalyptic stuff with an original world. The story is set in 2074, Europe has suffered a mysterious global catastrophe that has brought it back to the Middle Ages, where, instead of states, there various tribes with different traditions and technologies. The idea is great and I enjoyed exploring that world with the main characters. Unfortunately, it’s not as dirty and action-packed, but it reminded me a lot of Hunger Games and The 100, so if you're a fan of at least one of those, you won't be disappointed. The series has a nice production design, when it comes to action it's brutal and nicely shot, the intrigue, betrayals and twists work well to the point that I feel the Germans are building their own Game of Thrones. I was most impressed by the tribe of black crows, the villains – their Princess Varvara with her Angelina Jolie look is literally hypnotic with her sex appeal . There are three storylines going on at the same time and all of them are interesting and engaging enough in their own way. I had a great time and am excited for the second season. The cards are dealt and as a start of something spectacular, Tribes of Europa is solid. It's strange It=s strange that there are three characters that look almost exactly like Angelina Jolie, Mads Mikkelsen and Jennifer Lawrence. Pros: interesting and originally imagined world, solid pacing, likeable characters, a decent dose of twists and intrigue, the visuals and the brutality. Cons: lacks a downright epic action scene, the script could have been more imaginative. 7.5/10. ()
In recent wannabe thriller dramas (Behind Her Eyes, The Mess You Leave Behind) Netflix has been a total flop, but in post-apocalyptic sci-fi series like Alice in Borderland or Tribes of Europa they are scoring big. Tribes of Europa has literally everything that a series like this should have (the only thing missing for me is some more carnage like in Game of Thrones, something that would be etched in the viewer's memory) and it has no unnecessary side branches that would be boring. The characters are decent and engaging, and there are enough of them to give you a good chance to choose your "favourite". The actors, except for Oliver Masucci (the detective of Dark) are unknown but actually quite good. The plot is brisk, action-packed, often imaginative, and it gets huge plus points for acting like a series version of Divergence or Hunger Games, so similar fans will be quickly drawn in. There's plenty of action, often bloody and unexpectedly brutal, but there's also room for funny, light-hearted and sensitive scenes. The tribes are diverse, each differently advanced, each oriented towards a different aspect of combat, with different characteristics, and I reckon the second season will reveal more and there definitely will definitely be something to watch. Well, in a word, it's a blast. I'm very happy for this piece and I already want another season. Pretty damn good for Germany. ()
