Can We Take a Moment to Admire the Hair in Baldur's Gate 3?
Hair in RPG games is a serious matter. You can laugh as much as you want, but in Baldur's Gate 3 this aspect has been refined like no other game.
After playing Baldur’s Gate 3 I regret one thing: that there isn’t an official society of gamer-barbers who’d converge every year and vote on awarding the Golden Comb to the game offering the maddest hairstyles in the character wizard. This year’s Comb would have certainly gone to BG3.
Most games nowadays offer extensive character creators: take Monster Hunter World, for instance. You could spend hours in there, carefully shaping your character in the most minute details. Baldur’s early access’ character creator admittedly isn’t as complex; the creators from Larian Studios opted for simplicity, offering few elements, but all of them quite detailed. We can select race, face, iris color, skin tone, and… the hair. And that’s where most of you will certainly stop for a longer while.
Hairs have always been an awkward problem in games – creating detailed, convincing hair models is an arduous task, and generating wolf fur alone can really stress a mid-range GPU. Now, I don’t know who in Larian was entrusted with the task of creating hairstyles, but I have to say it out loud: these are the best god damn hair I’ve seen in games. And I’m not even into hair all that much.
Look for yourself what hairstyles look like in Baldur’s Gate 3 – note the detail, the single wisps, majestic buns, frivolous flocks. Lush and heavy hairstyles, or an easy buzz cut? Or maybe dreadlocks? Forget The Sims, guys and gals! Only this character wizard is worth your time. And remember – pictures don’t do it justice, it’s something you’ve got to see.
