Abandon Ship is a sandbox strategy game for PC, developed by debuting studio of Fireblade Software.
Plot
The game takes place in a fantasy world based on the golden age of sailing, between the 16th up to the half of the 19th century. The world is generated randomly each time, meaning that every playthrough brings new adventures.
Game mechanics
PC’s version of Abandon Ship lets us play as captain of great sailing ships, who ventures on distant sea expeditions. We gather experience points to unlock new skills, and we also develop our crew and ship. Interestingly, losing the vessel doesn’t end the game, as long as we save the captain, for example if he escapes on lifeboat or reaches dry land. Only if he dies our adventure ends, forcing us to start a new game.
The world of Abandon Ship is open, meaning we decide which missions we take and how to develop our career. There are also many random events, as well as a main plotline, which features our character trying to stop the plan of a mysterious cult that wants to bring an apocalypse. Many missions affect that story, changing the balance of forces in game’s world (including the geography) and giving us new friends and enemies. Abandon Ship also features complex tactical battles, which are played in real time and require employing various maneuvers and skillfully managing of our crew.
Technical aspects
Visuals are an interesting part of Abandon Ship. It uses full three-dimensional objects, but uses unusual style that resembles oil paintings. It has been mainly inspired by such artists as William Turner, Ivan Aivazovsky, Willem Velde, James Wilson Carcmichael and Ebenezer Colls.
