Abyssals is a city builder strategy game with survival elements. It was developed by an indie studio OverPowered Team and published by Shiro Games, also responsible for the bestselling Northgard and Wartales.

Plot

Abyssals is set in a grim future, after the Earth's destruction. In order to survive, humanity set out into outer space to find a new home. Though the newly discovered planet Abyss-62e seems suitable at first, upon arrival humans find it unhospitable; its atmosphere toxic, blocking off most of the light emitted by its star. The colonists of the Abyssal Colonization Project have no choice but to remain vigilant and try to adapt to life on the oceanic planet.

Mechanics

Abyssals makes use of the top-down perspective. The game is set underwater, our task being to build a thriving colony on the ocean floor. To do so, we must gather natural resources used to construct buildings and build critical infrastructure to collect and distribute oxygen throughout the settlement. The sea creatures dwelling in the depths of Abyss-62e don't take kindly to intruders, so we must also provide the colony with artificial lighting to detect threats before they strike.

This requires electricity, forcing us to develop its sources, generate more energy and reduce its consumption. By discovering the planet's secrets and exploring the environment, we gain access to resources used to develop our technology and increase our chances of survival.
