Amnesia: Collection for PS4 and PC is a bundle of two games: Amnesia: The Dark Descent with add-on Justine and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. The first was created by Frictional Games studio, while the latter has been developed by Chinese Room team (Death Ester).
Plot
Amnesia: The Dark Descent tells a story of Daniel, who wakes up in grim castle and can’t remember how he got here. What he knows is that something terrible happened here, and so the players must do something about it and discover protagonist’s past. In the Justine, we play as a woman name who is an object in psychological experiment.
The second game isn’t a sequel to the The Dark Descent, instead telling a completely new story. We follow the life of Oswald Mandus, who has contracted and exotic disease during his travels. One day, he wakes up after a strange nightmare and realizes he is alone in his home. He feels, though, that his children are in danger, so he quickly start looking for them.
Game mechanics
Amnesia is a series of scary adventure games, emphasizing the atmosphere and the plot. In case of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, gameplay focuses on exploring dark locations, solving puzzles and avoiding enemies at all cost. Sine our character can’t fight back, a meeting with a monster leads to a certain death. To make things worse, we must manage mental health of a protagonist – not only it drops down when we witness drastic or terrifying scenes, but even prolonged stay in the dark makes Daniel lose his sanity. The problem is that darkness may be our only hope of hiding from enemies, while using oil lantern (which, obviously, requires matches to light) may bring us unwanted attention.
While Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs follows in its predecessor steps, it doesn’t focus that much on scaring players. Developers changed some elements known from the first game (e.g. there aren’t as many puzzles), and less jumpscares are present, with the atmosphere coming mainly from locations; design and playing with the players’ mind.
