The Assassin's Creed series is undoubtedly one of the most popular franchises owned by Ubisoft company. Bearing in mind expectations of fans’, the publisher has entrusted development of Assassin's Creed: Revelations with Montreal Studio, while providing the support of the teams of Ubisoft Annecy, Massive, Quebec, Singapore, and Bucharest. The developers aimed to enrich familiar gameplay elements to with new features and options, while staying true with the game universe.
Assassin's Creed: Revelations takes place in the 16th century, however, at times the story takes you four centuries back. The main hero is Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the protagonist of both Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. He embarks on a perilous journey in the footsteps of his ancestor and master - Altair. The trail leads him to Constantinople, the heart of the Ottoman Empire, where a growing army of Templars poses a threat of destabilization in the region.
The story of Assassin's Creed: Revelations is full of flashbacks and subplots. The developers took care to make each playthrough unique by implementing random missions that are given by different NPCs.
Among novelties in the game there is a special hook that allows for covering long distance with rope traverse technique (so-called Tyrolean traverse). This method significantly reduces the time required for moving to a selected location, however, it has certain limitations. Traditionally, since you play as an assassin, you have an arsenal of deadly weapons at your disposal. Another interesting thing is bomb creation system. By combining various ingredients you can prepare up to 300 different types of grenades, which come in handy during missions.
Creators also decided to expand some gameplay elements, such as "eagle vision", which was renamed to "eagle sense". It allows the main character to predict where an enemy or an independent character is going to go to. Moreover, influence system in the city was altered. Previously featured the Borgia Towers were replaced by the Templars Towers. Capturing them looks almost identical, but this time, it is also necessary to defend once acquired position. In order to repel an attack, you have to play an elaborate mini-game that resembles a tower defense game. The safety of these hiding places depends on the publicity – the more attention assassins draw to themselves, the more likely a Templar attack is.
Compared to the previous installments in the series, Assassin's Creed: Revelations puts greater emphasis on features that require logical thinking. An example of this is "Black Room" mode. This allows Desmond, the Animus user, to access memories of his ancestors. These are presented in forms of puzzles, requiring skillful space manipulation.
The game uses proven Anvil graphics engine. It was enriched with "Mocam" technology, which combines traditional animation with motion-capture for facial expressions.
In addition to single player, the creators of Assassin's Creed: Revelations provided expansive multiplayer mode. Multiplayer is strongly associated with the game’s story, and players can, among others, create their own avatars and guilds.
