Baby Steps is a creative cross of an arcade and adventure game. It was created by three developers: Gabe Cuzzillo (responsible for the warmly received Ape Out), Bennett Foddy (responsible for the equally creative Getting over it with Bennett Foddy) and Maxi Boch.
Plot
The main protagonist of Baby Steps is Nate. Unemployed and living with his wealthy parents, he lives a boring life seemingly doomed to never achieving anything other than watching TV and eating junk food in his pajamas. One day, however, he's transported to a strange, foggy mountainous land. Willingly or not, Nate must start moving forward... which turns out to be more challenging than it may seem.
Although the story touches on such topics as wasting one's life and trying to give it meaning, it also features plenty of humor.
Mechanics
Baby Steps is a third-person game (TPP). The game is set in many diverse, atmospheric locations, such as barren mountain peaks, dark forests and ravines.
Before we can start traversing them freely, we must first learn how to control the main character. Nate walks clumsily and has trouble maintaining balance, making movement very challenging. Things don't get easier once we learn how to move, as Nate must get past narrow passages and slippery, muddy slopes, where he can easily fall or hurt himself.
Technical aspects
Baby Steps features decent visuals. The atmospheric locations and Nate's clumsy animations are all rather appealing.
