To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Danganronpa brand, Spike Chunsoft studio (Zanki Zero: The Last Beggining, 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors) decided to release a special version of the cult visual novel in which a group of kids fight for survival by completing increasingly strange tasks assigned by a not-so-sympathetic teddy bear called Monokuma. Danganronpa Decadence includes the three main installments of the series - Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Anniversary Edition, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair Anniversary Edition and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony Anniversary Edition, as well as a bonus game in the form of a brand new game in the typical board game style, namely Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp.
Plot
The storyline in this edition of the detective visual novel has not changed. Each of the three installments of the visual novel focuses on a murderous game of survival that the students of an elite school are forced to play, either locked away or fenced off from the world (depending on the part), with the task of killing each other to guarantee victory. However, they can't be caught doing so and should make sure to leave enough traces to frame someone else for the crime. If they manage to do so, they can win their freedom, but if the rest of their classmates correctly identify the culprit during the Class Trial, they are punished by Monokuma and the game continues.
Mechanics
The gameplay itself in Danganronpa Decadence also remained unchanged. Moving around the locations, observed from the first person perspective (sometimes also from the side), we interact with the original characters, look for evidence and clues at the scene of the crime, take part in the trials, in which, in addition to properly selected charges and counter-arguments, we have to be skillful and fast, and we can play additional content, available in each part of the series. Each installment also has a gallery, thanks to which we can browse through the already unlocked cutscenes and illustrations, as well as listen to voiced dialogues.
A complete novelty for the series is Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp, an expanded version of the content known to players from the third installment - Danganronpa V3, or Ultimate Talent Development Plan. We can find here all the characters taking part in each installment of the game, and their goal is to collect Hope Fragments scattered around the key locations for the series. To do this, we develop our characters in an RPG style by fighting opponents and collect money from them to be able to upgrade our equipment and fight the island boss, and then continue the adventure on another island.
Technical aspects
Danganronpa Decadence combines 3D locations with 2D character sprites, all shown in a manga style. In addition, you will find typically pixel art segments with the camera seen from a side perspective. Each of the parts has a characteristic soundtrack well reflecting the events happening on screen.
