Infestation: Survivor Stories

Deadside emphasizes a multitude of mechanics, balancing between a multiplayer shooter and survival game. The game takes place in a doomed post-apocalyptic world, but we won't experience any supernatural things like zombies or anomalies. Instead, the creators focused on the realistic aspects of life on the ruins of a civilization. Before the official release, the game was available for testing in Steam early access. The creators of the game, Bad Pixel, made themselves known to the world with UFO Online: Invasion and VR Enigma.

Plot

There is no plot as such in the game. Instead, we learn the history of the world and the people who live there through the appearance of the locations, short conversations with friendly NPCs and missions they commission. During the game we meet characters belonging to different factions. These may be security forces still loyal to the former government, cannibal groups living in small villages, bandits interested in our property, lonely wanderers or other players. With the latter, we either battle or establish cooperation and move around the world together. The missions themselves do not feature an extensive story and mostly consist of fighting against specific groups of enemies in given areas.

Mechanics

Deadside begins with the creation of our character. Then we are taken to an open map of about 225 square kilometres, filled with forests, abandoned settlements, roads, rivers or vast fields. In selected locations there are "Green Zones", i.e. places where we can buy ammunition, food and exchange information about the world from traders, and store a limited number of items in special lockers. In these zones it is also not possible to battle other players. The world is traversed on foot or in vehicles, both land and water. In order to use them, we must constantly repair their damaged parts and watch the amount of fuel in the tank. Depending on our preferences, we can observe the game from TPP and FPP, which can be changed at any time during the game.

There are more than 15 weapons and accessories available in the game. The guns have their own sets of animations, sounds and advanced ballistic models. The projectiles, when they break through an object, change their flight path and speed. The degree of this transformation depends on the material of the obstacle and its thickness. Bullet's speed affects the damage it deals, as does the part of the body in which it hits the enemy. It is worth noting that in the case of rifles, each of the bullets has its own trajectory, which is to serve to make the system of shooting with this weapon more realistic.

Any player can take part in the missions valid on a given map. Battles between them and their opponents in the game can take many hours, depending on how many people are involved. However, the prizes will be awarded only to those who manage to search for killed NPCs and other players.

An additional element of the game is a crafting system. It enables us to build our own hiding places and shelters, where we can store our items.

Other

During its development, Deadside became one of the four games that received the Grand Prix award at DevGamm 2019 in Minsk in the Unreal Engine category.
