Metroid Prime Remastered is a remastered version of the iconic Metroid Prime, first released on the Nintendo GameCube in 2002. This action adventure game with metroidvania and FPS elements was developed by the same studio as the original game, Retro Studios, and published by Nintendo, the owners of the franchise.

Plot

The main protagonist of Metroid Prime Remastered is Samus Aran, an intergalactic bounty hunter. She receives a distress signal from a crashed frigate orbiting the planet Tallon IV and decides to investigate what happened there. She finds out the destroyed vessel was a research station of the Space Pirates, aboard which they conducted genetic experiments using a substance called Phazon. During her investigation she encounters her nemesis - Meta Ridley - and chases him down to Tallon IV's surface. Samus' objective is to defeat her archenemy, discover the planet's secrets and bring an end to the Phazon research before it gets completely out of control.

Mechanics

The gameplay of Metroid Prime Remastered is shown from the first-person perspective (FPP). Throughout the game, the player traverses a variety of diverse, interconnected locations. During exploration we complete objectives, solve environmental puzzles, brave platforming challenges and face various enemies such as the Space Pirates, Tallon Metroids, the Parasite Queen or Meta Ridley himself. As we progress through the game we unlock various upgrades, which let us face increasingly stronger enemies and reach previously inaccessible areas; this makes backtracking and revisiting locations worth your while.

Samus' equipment deserves a separate mention. She's equipped with an advanced power suit and a helmet with a visor; the visor has different modes, letting her examine encountered objects and interact with them or scan enemies to learn their weaknesses. The visor can be upgraded over time, equipping it with addition thermal and x-ray vision modes. Samus' power suit also lets her morph into a ball, which she can make use of both during exploration (by squeezing through small passages and rolling through tiny corridors) and combat (by planting bombs after installing specific upgrades). Her main weapon, however, is her arm cannon, which transforms bioenergy into deadly beams. Progressing through the game upgrades the cannon, letting us transform it into a missile launcher or an electric wave gun.

Technical aspects

Compared to the original game, the visuals of Metroid Prime Remastered have been significantly upgraded. The controls have also been upgraded, featuring two control schemes: the classic control scheme known from the original Metroid Prime, as well as a new, dual-stick scheme. The remaster also features a special, simple difficulty, letting the player focus on the story rather than the combat. Other new additions are unlockable music tracks and character galleries.
