Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is an unusual production inspired by old competitions organized by Nintendo. The tournaments, which took place in 1990, 2015 and 2017, featured players competing in NES titles such as Tetris or Super Mario Bros.
Gameplay
Unlike live tournaments, Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition focuses exclusively on speedruns. The game is basically a collection of over 150 challenges based on 13 iconic titles from the Nintendo catalog:
- Balloon Fight
- Donkey Kong
- Excitebike
- Ice Climber
- Kid Icarus
- Kirby's Adventure
- Metroid
- Super Mario Bros.
- Super Mario Bros. 2
- Super Mario Bros. 3
- Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels
- The Legend of Zelda
- Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
During the game, the player can watch a replay of their best run of a given stage so far, to help them achieve a better time. The challenges themselves range from very simple, such as reaching the first door in world 1-1 in Super Mario Bros. 2, to truly demanding tasks for passionate speedrunners.
Game modes
Nintendo World Championship: NES Edition is a production focused on competition with other people. In network mode, the gameplay does not take place in real time. Instead, players try to improve their times. Every week, the game presents five different challenges to the participants, who compete for a place on the global leaderboards.
Nintendo World Championship: NES Edition allows for local competition in the Party Mode for up to eight players. There's also a single-player mode - it allows to focus on beating our own records and unlocking new challenges for coins. The number of these depends on the level of challenge and achievements gained.
