One Lonely Outpost is an open-world RPG in which we discover the secrets of a barren planet, developing a colony on it and establishing relationships with incoming settlers. It was developed by independent Aurorian Studios and Freedom Games is responsible for the release.
Plot
We arrive on a barren, uninhabited planet with a handful of the most necessary things to start a new colony and our own farm. Although scientists say it shouldn't be so, our planet has many of the elements necessary for life to function. Why this is so, as well as other secrets of the place, we can discover by exploring centuries-old ruins guarded by robots. As the new settlement develops, it attracts more inhabitants, establishing homes in our growing town. We must ensure that the colony prospers, sometimes protecting it from threats from the outside, such as greedy bureaucrats, to defend its independence.
Game mechanics
After creating a character we start the game as a lone colonist with a robotic pet on his farm, with a handful of items to start with, including a useful multi-tasking gadget - a tech glove. On the farm we can do things like grow crops, raise animals, expand infrastructure or cook. Performing various activities (some of them are connected with mini-games), we increase our proficiency and statistics. We have to choose whether our farm will be Natural, with traditional earth organisms, or we will go down the Synthetic path with robo-cows and genetic engineering being the order of the day. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages, affecting how we deal with the harsh conditions on the planet or the value of the products we get. Over time, we become more and more self-sufficient and even make money from the produced resources.
Beyond our domains we can explore the ruins and fight with the robots protecting them. We can find there valuable items and discover the secrets of the planet. On our way we also encounter creatures that need our help and other challenges that push our work on the settlement forward.
Along with the development of the colony there are new inhabitants from different corners of the galaxy, slowly creating a small, flourishing town. Each of them has a unique character, history and abilities. Their help is sometimes useful to us, we can also establish relationships with them or perform missions. In the case of some of the NPCs, if we want it, friendship will turn into love, and from there it's a simple way to get married, start a family and raise children.
Apart from these activities we can have fun in various mini-games - from card games in the pub, through fishing to dodging between asteroids in space.
