Outcast 1.1

Outcast is an original action adventure game created by a small Belgian Appeal studio, founded by Yann Robert, Franck Sauer and Yves Grolet. The development team also worked on the second edition of The Lost Paradise, but production was cancelled. Infogrames company, currently Atari, was responsible for the release of the game.

In Outcast we hit the embrace of the mysterious planet Adelpha, on which the alien race Talan lives. In 2007, the Americans sent a space research probe to prove that there are other inhabited worlds outside the Earth. Initially, everything went according to the ideas of scientists, when unexpectedly a probe sent to the planet of aliens was destroyed by the local people. In this way a black hole was created, which is a threat to the Earth. It was necessary to save the world, and only one man - Cutter Slade, a retired soldier of the American fleet, the best of the best. The protagonist was commissioned to escort three scientists (William Kauffmann, Anthony Xue and Marion Wolfe) to an alien planet, where they were to find the probe and thus prevent the extinction of the world. But something went wrong, Slade was separated from the rest of the crew and mistakenly baptized Ulukai, Messiah and Savior of the Talan people. The hero must win their favour and free them from the yoke of Faé Rhân, the tyrant who is stifling the natives.

The game, shown in a third-person perspective, consists primarily in exploring an open world with diverse scenery, conversations with numerous NPCs, solving logical riddles and shooting at enemy units of the dictator Talan people. Production offers freedom of movement, and as a result, we don't have to focus solely on the leading, linear plot. The game world was filled with side tasks in several different regions of Adelphy.

In the course of the game we visit six different areas in terms of both flora and fauna. They are: Ranzaar, characterized by a frosty atmosphere - this is the coldest part of the planet, Shamazaar, one of the largest sources of food, Talanzaar, a huge desert with only one, but the largest city on the planet - Okriana, Motazaar, mountainous terrain with valuable materials needed to make weapons, Okasankaar, full of dangerous waters, filled with m.It is the place where the Cuttera ship crashed, home to the primitive Talan people who are reluctant to treat strangers. Portals are used to move from one area to another.

The game was developed on an engine that does not support 3D acceleration. The technology used was called voxeli, similar to what was used in the first titles of the Comanche series. Nevertheless, the artists managed to achieve excellent results - on the day of the premiere Outcast dazzled with open terrain and graphic elements, such as glows, light flashes and well-described weather effects. The most noteworthy is the game world, or rather its structure, characterized by deformation, which, combined with the unusual climate of a foreign planet, made a great impression at the end of the 1990s. Overcoming a diverse area made the character's animation more enjoyable, and the hero could not only jump, but also turtle, swim and dive.

The soundtrack (honoured in 2000 by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Interactive Achievement Awards), composed by Lennie Moore, known for producing music for such games as Dragonshard, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary or Star Wars: The Old Republic, also helped to create an amazing atmosphere. The works were created in cooperation with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. What's also worth noting is that the game was fully duplicated, so we didn't have to deal with nonsense characters, so it was even easier to "blend in" with Outcasta's world.
