Peace Island is an action adventure game in which the player controls members of a "cat gang" trying to save the world and solve the mystery of disappearing people. The production was financed by the campaign on Kickstarter and supports virtual reality sets. Its creation and release is the responsibility of indie developer Erich Blumrich and it is his debut project (at least when it comes to video games).
Plot
The action of the game takes place on the Peace Island, inspired by real places ( Maine Islands on the east coast of the United States). The storyline consists of several separate stories, which, over time, merge into one. The stories use science fiction motifs and threads related to alternative history and crime. The main theme is the disappearance of people and the cats' reaction to the situation. Are the humans really bringing back?
Mechanics
In Peace Island, we observe the action from behind the hero's back ( third-person perspective - TPP). The player takes on the role of one of a few different cats (initially we change the characters only after reaching a certain point in the story, but with time the animals start to travel together). The gameplay consists mainly in exploring large locations - you will find here a farm, a town, a fishing village and a tower from the Second World War.
As we progress, we discover the clues associated with the disappearance of people. It is very important to infiltrate various buildings here; to get into some of these, we need to think a little bit. In the game world we can come across dozens of different structures and the vast majority of them can be reached.
Cats need to be vigilant because not everything on the island is friendly (but the game is not focused on fighting). During their adventure, cats also encounter other animal inhabitants of the island, who can offer them additional tasks and allow them to move around safely - if the player gains their trust.
We also find various items - such as newspapers and documents - that shed more light on the alternative history of the universe. It is worth noting that in the game we won't find a traditional fast-travel system, but the player has the ability to create a network of portals that allow cats to move to each other (only a specific animal can use its own passage, so sometimes you have to figure out).
Game modes
We can play Peace Island only alone. The main game mode is a feature campaign.
Technical aspects
Peace Island has a decent, three-dimensional graphic design, which was created using the popular Unity engine. The graphics design is not particularly realistic, but both the locations and the cats present a solid level of detail. The locations have been prepared to be pleasing to the eye, and cats are quite well animated and move similarly to animals known from the real world.
It is worth noting that the soundtrack of this production was composed by Kyle Preston - author of the music to Prune.
