Peasant is a sandbox game from the RPG genre, in which every decision we make can have a key impact on the world we're in. The project is a debut work of the independent Harakka Studio from Finland and was financed thanks to a successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. The creators were inspired by series such as Bioshock, Dishonored, and The Legend of Zelda.
Plot
Peasant takes us to a quasi-medieval fantasy world called Saer inhabited by legendary monster slayers. We will not play as one of them and instead we take control of the titular peasant, who is far from a brave hero. As a young Aura from the mountain village of Beinn, we challenge the arrogant heroes who notoriously abuse their privileges.
Gameplay
The work of Harakka studio is a third-person production with an extensive, open world. Peasant offers freedom of how we play - we can explore the world, establish relationships with other races or fight. However, if we are not interested in the life of adventure hunters, nothing stops us from taking up farming, taming animals or creating steampunk machines.
Regardless of the path chosen, we gradually develop our character in one of over twelve career paths (including the path of a druid, diplomat, wizard or necromancer), and each of them offers different abilities and equipment elements. In Peasant we do not deal with a classic skill tree. The protagonist's skills increase depending on our actions - so if we focus too much on cutting down trees, we will forever turn our backs on nature, at the same time increasing our effectiveness in sowing chaos.
The world of Peasant dynamically responds to all our actions. The choices we make can change the character's face (e.g. give it a demonic appearance), as well as influence the way we are perceived by the in-game factions. The cause-and-effect chain goes much further - killing a hero known for slaying dragons will increase the population of dangerous reptiles, while refusing to help an attacked village may result in its complete destruction.
