Red Dead Online is a multiplayer action game which is also a network module of Red Dead Redemption 2. On December 1, 2020 RDO was released as a standalone game (with the option to purchase a single player campaign). Rockstar Games is responsible for the creation of both.
Plot
The story of Red Dead Online takes place in the year 1898, before the events of RDR 2 campaign. The player takes the role of a cowboy created by himself, wrongly accused of murder and sentenced to death. The main character is freed by strangers who attack the prison convoy carrying him. It turns out that the widow of the businessman who was framed for the protagonist's murder is responsible for taking over the convoy. She offers him cooperation - clearing himself of all charges in exchange for help in taking revenge on the real killers.
Gameplay
RDO is based on a similar scheme as the previously released Grand Theft Auto Online. The developers used the content developed for Red Dead Redemption 2, adding multiplayer elements. Players go to America at the end of the Wild West era and join up in gangs of up to 7 players. They have at their disposal a vast area full of interesting places and numerous activities. These include both short story missions performed in co-op mode and a number of side quests commissioned by NPCs. Classic competitive multiplayer modes and horse racing are also available. There are also a few borrowings from the multiplayer mode of the original Red Dead Redemption. For all activities, players receive two types of virtual currency - dollars and gold bullion - which can be spent on numerous upgrades and cosmetic items.
Frequent updates brought many new elements to the game. RDO includes a system of professions - special roles that we can take in the game world. Each of the available specializations is associated with different duties, activities, and rewards for gaining experience. For example, as a bounty hunter we have to catch criminals and bring them to justice. By increasing our level as a bounty hunter, we unlock, among other things, strengthened lasso to make it harder for our victims to escape and the ability to hunt other players. The moonshiner profession allows us to set up an illegal distillery and bar. In return, we gain significant earnings on successful deliveries.
The game contains several progression systems, by means of which we can strengthen our character. In addition to the mentioned above specializations, we are rewarded with experience by doing almost every action. Gathering enough points of experience increases our rank. In this way, we unlock new weapons and skill cards. The player can use up to four cards simultaneously, which forces us to choose between skills. Cards have a variety of effects, such as increased damage when riding a horse, the ability to strangle enemies with a lasso or health regeneration after killing an enemy. While playing, we have to choose the cards that fit our chosen style of play.
Outlaw Pass
The last system of progression is the so-called Outlaw Pass, available only in certain periods of time. It plays a role comparable to the battle passes from other games. After purchasing the pass we gain experience that increases its level. This gives us access to unique rewards, impossible to get in any other way.
Deathmatch and battle royale
Free exploration of the world and cooperative missions are not the only things that RDO has to offer. The Rockstar game also includes an impressive number of competitive modes. We have at our disposal, among others, classic deathmatch, two variations on Battle Royale, horse racing and taking over control points.
Red Dead Online uses the same audiovisual setting as the basic RDR2 2. It is available for free for purchasers of the basic version of the game, but also exists as a completely independent game.
