RetroSpace is a first-person action horror immersive sim. It was developed by The Wild Gentlemen, a Hungarian studio known for Chicken Police.
Plot
The game is set in a retrofuturistic future inspired by sci-fi movies and comic books from the 1960s and 1970s. It takes place aboard the traveling space station Aurora 5, part of a large fleet seeking a new home for humanity.
Its trajectory is controlled by computers and robots. One day, however, Aurora 5 goes off-course and flies directly into a black hole. The game's protagonist is a janitor, awakened in order to save the station. He quickly discovers it full of bloodthirsty mutants and space-time anomalies.
Mechanics
RetroSpace is first-person (FPP) action game. The player has a lot of freedom in how to complete objectives and deal with problems. They can either engage enemies in open combat, sneak their way past them or mix both these tactics, depending on the situation.
Every death is permanent. When we die, the station clones a new version of ourselves, which we take control over. We can then return to where we previously died to retrieve our gear. The cloning mechanism is not perfect, as clones can often end up with flaws which affect gameplay. The player can also deliberately mutate their character, granting new abilities but also resulting in unpredictable side effects.
The game's enemy roster is very expansive. Each monster is unique, acts differently, with learning their patterns being the key to dealing with them. Players must also battle against the on-board security systems, which often pose a deadly threat, but can also be modified to support us against other enemies.
The game offers a lot of freedom during exploration as well. Aurora 5 is a single map with numerous alternate paths and unlockable shortcuts. Just like in metroidvanias, many areas are initially inaccessible and can only be reached after acquiring a skill or specific piece of gear.
Game modes
The game is only playable in singleplayer.
Technical aspects
The 3D visuals of RetroSpace make use of an old-school artstyle inspired by PC FPS games from the mid-to-late 1990s.
