Romancing SaGa is a classic jRPG series but the majority of the games weren't published outside Japan. One of the exceptions is Romance SaGa 2 which is a remastered version of the original from 1993. The game was developed and released by Square Enix on mobile devices with iOS and Android.
Plot
The plot of the remastered Romance SaGa 2 is identical to the one presented in the original from 1993. The story is connected with the legend of the Seven Heroes. According to it, they banished evil from the world a long time ago. After that, they have disappeared. Many centuries later, however, their history was still alive, and people expected them to return to bring peace once again. The legendary Seven Heroes finally return, but this time in the form of demons. The only hope is the royal dynasty residing in Avalon castle. For generations, the family has been trying to drive out the Seven Heroes for good and restore order to the world.
Mechanics
The main heroes of Romancing SaGa 2 are the rulers of Avalon castle. The first of them is King Leon, and his successor is Gellard, the king's son. Each successive heir to the throne is elected by us after a certain amount of time passes - when the end of the reign of a given generation approaches, we have four candidates to choose from. All the qualities and skills of the previous rulers are passed on to their successors, so the further we are in the game, the stronger and smarter our (next) character is. Over time, well-developed skills will allow us to face the Seven Heroes.
As a ruler, we have the task of looking for gold and treasure by collecting taxes and properly managing the state budget. With time, we will be able to go to the dungeons, which are scattered around the world. Clearing and taking control of them helps our kingdom to develop. In addition, Avalon castle has a garden with a royal tree. Besides fruit, the tree will also provide the well-being and health of family members.
During the game, we can meet many heroes who will want to join us and help in traversing dungeons and fighting. Together with them, we can create combat formations that will allow us to better adapt to battles with enemies and skillfully use the advantages, eliminating the drawbacks of our companions. Keep an eye on the health points of the main character's companions - when one of them falls on the battlefield, that person will be dead forever.
Compared to the first Romancing SaGa, the second part introduced a new feature called Glimmers to the development system. It is based on receiving random skills by the hero while using weapons or fighting. This is accompanied by a characteristic flash over the character model, which means that you can use a new skill. It's worth mentioning that Romancing SaGa 2 doesn't impose the path we have to take during the game. After the initial tutorial, the player can freely explore the world and learn its secrets, both in the basic game mode and in the exclusively added "New Game+" mode.
Language versions
The remastered version of Romancing SaGa 2 for AND and iOS had its premiere on March 24, 2016, but then the game contained only the Japanese language version. Surprisingly, Square Enix has decided to prepare an English edition by adding subtitles.
Technical aspects
In terms of graphics, the mobile versions of Romance SaGa 2 are very similar to the original, although many elements of the environment have been improved and their resolution has been increased. Characters have received new combat new animations. However, everything was done in such a way to remain faithful to the original from 1993.
