Silent Service is a World War II submarine simulator developed by legendary Sid Meier and MicroProse. The production was released on many platforms, and its debut dates back to 1985.
Mechanics
In Silent Service, the player takes control of an American submarine from World War II - its task is to patrol the waters of the Pacific Ocean in search of the Japanese fleet. We face both single ships and armed convoys. To win, we have to use the equipment installed onboard the ship, or the technological advantage over the opponent (for example, electrically-powered torpedoes that do not generate air bubbles moving towards the surface), but above all use appropriate tactics, including the famous "End Around".
A characteristic feature of the title is the high level of realism - the events in which we take part and the places of subsequent battles are historically accurate.
Technical aspects
At the time of its release, Silent Service boasted high quality graphics. Interestingly, the game had to face many limitations due to insufficient computing power of the platforms - for example, up to four missiles can be used at the same time, which significantly reduces the scale of individual battles. In addition, activities such as navigation, damage repair or firing have been assigned to separate screens.
