Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Total War: Three Kingdoms - Mandate of Heaven is the second add-on to Total War: Three Kingdoms strategy game released in May 2019. The expansion introduces a new story campaign, which takes place in 182 A.D. - during the Yellow Turban Rebellion. The player can take part in a historical conflict by taking any side. We also receive a number of new gameplay mechanics. The expansion was developed by Creative Assembly, the developers of the basic version and other parts of the series. The publisher is Japanese company Sega.
Plot
182 A.D. - China is in chaos. Corruption at the imperial court led to a devastating famine. An increasing number of subjects are beginning to come to the conclusion that the monarch has lost the heavenly mandate - the divine right to exercise power. People grab their weapons and follow the three Taoist brothers in yellow turbans - Zhang Jue, Zhang Liang and Zhang Bao. Who will rule when the Emperor is defeated?
Mechanics
Total War: Three Kingdoms - Mandate of Heaven introduces several new factions, featured in the new campaign, with their unique mechanics. These include Emperor Ling, at whose court there is an ongoing power struggle between several parties (bureaucrats, dynasties and warlords) or the leaders of the Yellow Turban Rebellion, who use their unique resources of enthusiasm and fervor (the former "powers" the rebellion, while the latter indicates society's support). Each side of the conflict also has its own specific victory conditions and development trees.
In addition, the campaign features a number of new mechanics such as recruitment not related to regions (armies can recruit when they are in an area that is not controlled by the opponent, even if it does not belong to them) and historical factions controlled by the AI, which start to appear later during the game.
There are also forty new units, among which we can find elite regiments - Chen Peacekeepers (cavalry), Destroyer of Traitors (shock cavalry), Yaoguai Hunters (archers with poisoned arrows) or Zealots of the Way (universal infantry, which uses two-handed polearms).
Game modes
Total War: Three Kingdoms - Mandate of Heaven offers single and multiplayer modes. The only new mode is another story campaign featuring, among others, the Yellow Turban Rebellion. However, new units and generals can also be used in battles played in multiplayer modes.
Technical aspects
Total War: Three Kingdoms - Mandate of Heaven does not make any significant changes to the basic game.
