Yooka-Replaylee is a thoroughly refreshed and content enriched version of the 3D platformer titled Yooka-Laylee, released in 2017. The game was developed by the authors of the original, i.e. the independent studio Playtonic Games, founded by developers who previously co-created some of the greatest hits made by Rare studio, such as Banjo-Kazooie or Donkey Kong Country.

Plot

Yooka-Replaylee takes us on a journey to a colorful world whose fate hangs in the balance when the sinister Capital B decided to collect all the books in the world and turn them into money. When his greedy hands reached the land of Shipwreck Creek to seize the most powerful of them, the residents Yooka and Laylee decided to step into action and thwart his plans. It's up to us to make them succeed.

Gameplay

In Yooka-Replaylee we watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). The game gives us two heroes who differ in appearance, size and skills. The green chameleon Yooka can run, jump, use his long tongue to attack enemies and grab onto elements of the environment. The purple bat Laylee, who spends most of her time on the head of her larger companion, can make use of ultrasound and wings. The former allows her to attack enemies, while the latter enables her to lift her colleague and cover short distances in the air.

The game takes place on diverse, vast maps with an open structure, which we can freely traverse. While exploring them, we jump over obstacles, avoid traps and terrain obstacles, and fight opponents. On the way, we collect pages of a magical book, giving us access to new locations, as well as other items that affect the gameplay in various ways (for example, healing our heroes or unlocking their new abilities).

Changes compared to Yooka-Laylee

Yooka-Replaylee stands out from the original thanks to new elements and numerous improvements. The authors delved into the challenges, both creating new ones and refining those that were present in the first version of the titular duo's adventure. In addition, there is a new, official currency of Hivory Towers, which we can spend in Vendi machines to purchase special tonics that enhance the abilities of our characters or provide cosmetic items for them.

It doesn't end there, because the developers provided us with a completely new world map and a system for tracking progress in individual challenges, as well as refreshed controls (so that individual movements can be combined more smoothly) and a previously unavailable camera.

Game modes

In Yooka-Replaylee we can play alone or in local co-op.

Graphics and sound

Yooka-Replaylee boasts refreshed graphics, including improved animations and increased resolution. During the game we are accompanied by orchestral arrangements of original pieces by Grant Kirkhope and David Wise.
