Age of Wonders 4 Story Realms Explained; How To Explore Lore

The new 4x game from Paradox Interactive publisher, Age of Wonders 4, has debuted on PC, XSX and PS5. As a fourth instalment of the series set in the land of Evermore, the developers from Triumph Studios have decided to take different approach with the storytelling. Similarly to the series spin-off, Age of Wonders: Planetfall, the game leaves classical campaign behind in place of “Story Realms”. Let’s explain what it means and how to dig into the game lore.
Realms in Age of Wonders 4
Age of Wonders 4 does not include a traditional, linear campaign as we know it from the previous titles in the series. Instead, the game offers 3 realms that focus on different way of narrative and gameplay. Those realms are:
- Story Realms,
- Tier Realms,
- Custom Realms.
Tier Realms' main role is to throw fans into more demanding world with predefined rules. On the other hand, Custom Realms allow the player to choose the realm traits by themselves to personalise the experience. However, if you want to learn more about lore, Story Realms is the main way of telling the plot of the game.
Story Realms and how to explore the plot
The developers decided to take a new route instead of a conventional campaign to not limit the player to linear or limited way of exploring the game’s narrative. This decision is polarising in the title’s community with some players praising it while others despising it completely.
Story Realms tell the history of the return of the Godir, who are godlike mages in the world of Age of Wonders. Picking the Story Realms chapters, you can choose your own faction, but you have to be prepared to face imposed map rules. After completing the first chapter of Story Realms, the next one will be unlocked. There is only a couple of them though.
Beyond the main plot of the game, the story is told by series of dynamic events and quests, that can occur also in Custom Realms, so pay attention to those. Be careful as the gear and character levels are not kept throughout the course of the chapters.
