Details on God of War's Upgrades on PS5

Santa Monica Studio has revealed that 2018's God of War will offer an improved gameplay experience on PlayStation 5 compared to current generation. What resolution and performance can we expect?

God of War on PS5 is:
  • Smooth animation in up to 60 fps in performance mode;
  • Ability to import saves from PlayStation 4.

With backward compatibility, we can play older games with better graphics and/or performance on the PS5. What about God of War, the 2018 hit from Santa Monica Studio? The creators have shared the news on Twitter that the game will run in performance mode on PlayStation 5 in up to 60 fps. The mention of an alternative option called 'Favor Performance' by the developers clearly suggests that gamers can only dream of such smooth animation in 4K resolution. Moreover, the use of "up to" indicates that even constant 60 fps is not guaranteed.

It is unclear at what resolution God of Warwill run in performance mode on PS5. At best, we'll get dynamic 4K (unlikely, otherwise this resolution would be mentioned), and at worst, 1080p. The game will probably offer native 4K at 30 fps, but this has not yet been officially confirmed. This would be disappointing, given that God of War offered different modes of operation on PlayStation 4 Pro. Performance on the more powerful version of Sony's current-gen console was up to 50 fps in 1080p, while in scaled 4K it was 30 fps. This will be explained no later than November 12, when the next-gen console will be released on the first markets.

In addition, Santa Monica Studio has revealed that we will be able to move the saved game data from PlayStation 4 to PS5 with ease. Incidentally, this will also be possible in God of War III Remastered.

God of War was released exclusively on PlayStation 4 in April 2018. The creators are currently working on a direct sequel. God of War Ragnarok (working title), as the game is known as, will launch on PS5 in 2021. Unfortunately, we don't know anything about the new game at this point.
