Elden Ring Director Concludes Discussion on Further Expansions to Soulslike Bestseller
The director of Elden Ring made it clear that Shadow of the Erdtree will be the last expansion to the hit soulslike game. The dev also addressed the development of the entire brand.
If you were hoping that Elden Ring would receive a few expansions (and Hidetaki Miyazaki's comments from February this year gave such hope), we have to disappoint you. The director of the hit soulslike from FromSoftware studio announced in an interview with the Chinese website Zhihu (via GamesRadar) that Shadow of the Erdtree will be the first and last expansion to the game. This decision is influenced by the open world characteristic of the title.
Elden Ring focuses on world exploration and a sense of adventure. In order to provide the players such an experience, it's necessary to build a vast and expansive area. So instead of breaking such an area up into multiple DLCs, it would be better to develop a massive DLC. It would be a disservice for the player's freedom to explore and sense of immersion if we were to sell multiple smaller DLCs - explained the developer.
FromSoftware may create another game set in the Elden Ring universe in the future, despite Shadow of the Erdtree serving as a bracket for the story from 2022.
We don't want to say this is the end of the Elden Ring saga for now. [...] We think that there could well be something the future -- Miyazaki revealed in an interview.
During the conversation, the issue of endings in Shadow of the Erdtree was also discussed. The developer revealed to journalists that the expansion won't offer a traditional final ending, as it includes many different choices that will affect the overall narrative.
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree will be released on June 21 on PC, PS4, PS5 XOne, and XSX/S.
