Elden Ring May Be FromSoftware's First and Last Such Vast Game. “It's the Limit,” Miyazaki Says
Hidetaka Miyazaki confessed that Elden Ring, along with the DLC, has set a „limit” for FromSoftware studio in terms of project size and scale. At the same time, the developer suggested that the Japanese developers could now create several smaller titles.
Last week's premiere of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion made Elden Ring the talk of the town again in the industry. The DLC, which strongly divided players, significantly expanded the already huge world of the Lands Between.
So a question may have arisen in the minds of many fans: how big will the next game from FromSoftware studio be? After all, the next projects of the same developers - especially from the top league - are usually bigger and more "epic."
However, it turns out that this time the devs may have hit the proverbial wall. As the "father" of soulslikes, Hidetaka Miyazaki, confessed in an interview with the British website The Guardian, "Elden" (along with the DLC) is currently a title that has reached the limit for FromSoftware in terms of the scope and scale of the project.
In terms of scale, I would say Elden Ring is really the limit. [To create this game] we've tapped every resource and talent that we have access to.
Miyazaki added that making a bigger game than Elden Ring wouldn't necessarily bring success to the studio. Following the statement of the Japanese industry visionary, it can be assumed that the studio will probably now focus on many smaller titles.
[If] scaling it even bigger, I’d have my concerns [in relation to Elden Ring]. Perhaps having multiple projects is the next stage [for the studio].
Miyazaki's words may herald the return of the Japanese to developing more closed worlds like those from the "Soulsborne" series. This would certainly please some old-school FromSoftware fans for whom the openness of Elden Ring turned out to be too overwhelming.
