Randy Pitchford is no Longer Head of Gearbox Software, but Stays With the Company
Randy Pitchford is no longer at the head of Gearbox Software. He has been replaced in this position by Steve Jones, the former chief technology officer. Pitchford will, however, remain the head of Gearbox Entertainment Company and Gearbox Studios.
Randy Pitchford is without a doubt one of the most recognizable (and controversial) people in the industry. Recent hours have brought some changes in his career. Here's the thing, as Gearbox representatives announced, after more than twenty years he ceased to be its chief executive. His post was taken by Steve Jones, who until now held the position of chief technology officer (via Game Developer).
Jones has tons of experience. He has been working in the video games industry for 22 years. He worked on Half-Life: Opposing Force, the original PC port of Halo, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, and the first two installments of the Borderlands series. Now he'll be overseeing work on several AAA projects that are in Gearbox Software's pipeline.
And what about Pitchford? He is not saying goodbye to the creators of Borderlands. He will still be the president of Gearbox Studios, which oversees the production of movie and TV adaptations of games from the studio's catalogue. He will also continue to lead The Gearbox Entertainment Company, a body bringing together all of the company's divisions. Thus, he will still have a very strong influence on the shape of the entire business.
