Tipping Devs After Finishing Games. Here's How Ex-Blizzard Chief Would Like to Get More Money From Gamers
The former CEO of Blizzard Entertainment, Mike Ybarra, came up with the idea that players should be able to „tip” the developers after completing a particular game.
I think each of us has already realized that the prices of games can sometimes be really horrendous. It would be somewhat understandable if the production quality on the premiere day was sufficiently good. Unfortunately, it happens - and it happens more and more often - that the technical condition of the titles appearing on the market is far from perfect. Both of these elements cause considerable frustration among gamers. The former Blizzard boss, Mike Ybarra's controversial idea will likely stir up some controversy.
The developer recently shared a solution that, in his opinion, could "cure" the crisis that has hit the video game world hard in recent months. According to him, gamers should give extra money (tips) to the devs of the games they love the most.
I've thought about this idea for a while, as a player, since I've been diving into single player games lately. When I beat a game, there are some that just leave me in awe of how amazing the experience was. At the end of the game, I've often thought "I wish I could give these folks another $10 or $20 because it was worth more than my initial $70 and they didn't try to nickel and dime me every second."
Games like Horizon: Zero Dawn, God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, etc. I know $70 is already a lot, but it's an option at the end of the game I wish I had at times. Some games are that special -- explains in a post on X.
Ybarra added that he understands that many people may not approve of this idea, as constant expenses in life wear everyone out, but he doesn't see this option as a pressure to spend money, as is often said.
Most of the comments under the developer's post disapproved of Ybarra's idea. Above all, online users emphasize that they don't feel satisfied after finishing many games. Below, you can read a few opinions:
Not everyone's pockets are deep -- @Edwin_isme.
I often play a game and am disappointed. Can I then get a refund? -- @miggymaru.
Or... wait... you could share more of the profit with the devs instead of asking more from the consumer -- @WanderingDutchX.
You're right, I should tip the devs for a great single player campaign on Modern Warfare III, terrific Season 1 and 3 of Diablo [IV], and extra tip for Overwatch 2 -- @theterk.
