Title Change Isn't Only Revolution in New Dragon Age. Replacing Main Antagonist May Also Come as Shock
Those who have been waiting for six years for the release of „four” may feel a bit disappointed by this turn of events.
The ongoing drought among Dragon Age fans is finally coming to an end. The fourth installment of the series, announced six years ago, has finally taken shape, largely thanks to the gameplay footage released today. BioWare officially released a twenty-minute snippet of the game, titled Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
After reviewing the material, we can conclude that the subtitle isn't the only thing that the developers decided to improve. Changes were also made to the main antagonist.
Dread Wolf hidden in the shadow
The plot of the new Dragon Age is a direct continuation of the events of the last expansion to Inquisition, in which a new threat to the land of Thedas was revealed. Fen’Harel is none other than an elven deity who is the patron of tricksters and is responsible for the destruction of his race's empire by creating the Veil.
In reality, Fen'Harel was a mage named Solas, who for years tried to correct his mistake and destroy the Veil - even if the price would be the world of humans. The situation is all the more tragic as the elf was among the inquisitor's initial companions, and his true nature was only unveiled at the conclusion of the DLC.
Considering Solas's impact on the plot, he couldn't be missing in the gameplay. A gameplay fragments demonstrates the new main character (introduced as Rook) and Varric, a familiar face from previous series installments, attempting to prevent the elf from completing his ritual.
Who are the new antagonists?
The efforts of the main characters bring unexpected results. Due to an interrupted spell, Solas inadvertently summons two sinister entities that are his ancient enemies. Their aim is, of course, to gain power over the world - as a result, it will be Rook's responsibility to defeat them.
This turn of events may be shocking to some Dragon Age fans. Considering the final conclusion of the Inquisition and the first announcements of the four installment dating back to 2018, Solas seemed to be the obvious candidate for the antagonist. Meanwhile, it appears that he won't be Thedas' biggest problem.
The ending of the events from the gameplay segment is most likely the reason why BioWare decided to change the official name. The game originally had a subtitle Dreadwolf, referring to another nickname of Fen'Harel (Dread Wolf) and thus implying that he will be taking the lead.
