Three years ago, Julie Bowen, notable for her 11-year-long stint in Modern Family, took the internet by storm after the news about her saving a fellow hiker in Utah broke out. Following the hiker’s visit to the 52-foot tall natural arch in Utah alongside her family, Minnie John, an avid traveler, passed out after urging her son and husband to continue the climb.

An LA salon-owner gets involved in an escalating feud with a rival facialist in this blackly comic thriller with a pleasing female focus
Following hot on the stiletto heels of female-led body-horror hit The Substance, comedy thriller Skincare also centres on a female protagonist – in this case facialist Hope Goldman (Elizabeth Banks) – who is dedicated to the pursuit of youthful appearance. This effort is far more grounded in realism than The Substance (it even sports a “based on a true story” tag at the beginning), but there is a similar blackly comic vibe at play, which makes it both fun and full of cringe moments that echo the Demi Moore-Margaret Qualley gorefest. At the very least, Banks proves herself equal to The Substance’s leads when it comes to projecting barely concealed anxiety and desperation under a thickly madeup facade. The film stars Elizabeth Banks in the lead role as medical surgeon Elizabeth Taylor. Besides her, the central cast includes Richard Crouchley, Simon McBurney, and Mickey Sumner.

Steve Carell’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin is often regarded as one of the funniest films of the 2000s and was instrumental in introducing many future stars. Judd Apatow’s directorial debut saw Carell leading a film for the first time and also featured Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Catherine Keener, Romany Malco, Leslie Mann, and Elizabeth Banks.
The film was reportedly based on a sketch that Carell had envisioned while he was performing improv comedy with the Chicago-based troupe The Second City. He mentioned that he pitched the idea as a last-minute ditch attempt after talking about multiple ideas with Apatow. He also said that the film was greenlit in a few weeks.

Variety honored some of the most influential and accomplished women in entertainment at its Power of Women event on Thursday, Oct. 24, in LA. Celebrity guests, including Selma Blair, Amy Poehler, and Elizabeth Banks, went all out with gala-appropriate outfits, some more traditional than others. As the evening unfolded, Kate Beckinsale took home the unofficial award for most unusual look. Fans found her blank stare and ballerina doll style a little “out there” for such an esteemed event. Regardless, the Serendipity star turned heads.

“It’s really only been in my second life as an actress here that I’ve started playing the lead role,” she explained to People. “It’s because I was a great ingénue for a long time. I played the lady in many movies to some great leading men. And then I had smaller roles in huge movies like The Hunger Games and Pitch Perfect, but never quite that DC or Marvel movie lead.”
Banks noted, “I’m often given more comic relief parts. So to have this offer felt like, wow, I’m going to...

Jessica Biel will no longer be The Good Daughter: The Emmy nominee has exited the upcoming Peacock limited series, according to our sister site Deadline, after signing on to star and executive-produce the project in March. A replacement for her is expected to be named soon.
Based on the best-selling novel from Karin Slaughter — who also pens the Will Trent book series on which ABC’s drama is based — The Good Daughter follows sisters Charlotte (who Biel would have played) and Samantha Quinn, who have spent the last 28 years trying to piece together the lives that were fractured by a single night of violence.

The satirical superhero series "The Boys" has done a phenomenal job of making its fictional world feel just as lived-in and established as our own. Instead of Fox News, they have Vought News, for example, but they have also included a whole bunch of celebrity cameos that make that fictional world feel a little less fictional. Sometimes the cameos are just a fun bit of stunt casting, but occasionally they elevate the scene or actually have meaning behind them. Series showrunner Eric Kripke has done a pretty good job of using the cameos sparingly but going for the gold when he does, occasionally asking series co-executive producer Seth Rogen to help him secure some of his more famous friends.

It’s been 16 years since Christine Jeffs’ last feature, the seriocomic Amerindie sleeper “Sunshine Cleaning,” with Amy Adams and Emily Blunt. Her new feature “A Mistake” hews back to her 2001 debut, “Rain,” in that it is set in her native New Zealand and adapts its script from a Kiwi author (in this case Carl Shuker’s fifth novel). Though not a knockout, the director’s return affirms her knack for intelligent adult drama, here hinging on issues of medical ethics and bureaucracy — Elizabeth Banks plays an Auckland surgeon whose reputation and career are threatened when a patient dies after what had been anticipated as a routine procedure. Quiver Distribution is releasing the Tribeca-premiered film to 100+ U.S. theaters this Friday.

Let it be said that nothing beats the atmosphere of a good medical drama. Ask the creative team behind “ER,” “Chicago Med,” or more recent streaming efforts such as “The Good Nurse“; any project able to successfully capture the tension, stakes, and life on-the-edge thrill of wrenching someone from the precipice of death or simply helping the terminally ill cope with their imminent last days deserves more than a passing glimpse.

Beauty is pain, but then again, so is heartache. The current film trend of 2024 are stories of women seeking perfection by any means necessary: Demi Moore risks turning into a crone for the sake of revitalizing her career in Cannes breakout film “The Substance,” Kate Hudson plays a shady cosmetics guru who may or may not be experimenting on clients in the name of eternal youth for “Shell,” and Elizabeth Banks loses her business — and her mind — in “Skincare” as a struggling facialist who is attempting to carve out her own space in the ever-changing beauty industry.
Now, Joey King is adding to the film landscape with “Uglies.” Despite not being the product of an original script like those other, aforementioned features, “Uglies” feels distinctly prescient in this era of influencers, filters, and — of course — discussions of what it means to get older as a woman.

Freshly divorced, with two daughters, trying to find her footing in West Hollywood, Dawn DaLuise was open to finding out what her true calling was. With her killer work ethic and scrappy temperament, she figured that skin was what she understood the most. After that, Dawn’s gift was recognized by the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, and her career as the owner of a small West Hollywood studio, Skin Refinery, took off. Dawn’s life and career had been marred by a peculiar set of crimes back in 2013. And apparently, she was rather thrown off when her phone was flooded with texts, letting her know that Austin Peters’ new beauty industry thriller was basically an unofficial adaptation of the convoluted mess she’d been caught in. In multiple interviews, Elizabeth Banks claimed not to have known about Skincare’s real-life implications until it was too late.

Since breaking through (at least to me) as the loose cannon nutso friend Shawn Eckardt in I, Tonya, Paul Walter Hauser has had a series of celebrated roles playing guys on the outskirts, including the bumbling Horace in Cruella, “Stingray” in Cobra Kai, the title character of the accused Atlanta Olympics bomber in Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell, hopeless criminal Booch in the current The Instigators, and his Emmy-winning role as creepy killer Larry Hall in Black Bird.
Well, chalk up another one as Hauser knocks it out of the park on the weirdo scale as legendary game show contestant Michael Larson in The Luckiest Man in America, which just had its world premiere as one of the 2024 Toronto Film Festival’s opening-night attractions. A couple days back, a friend and I were talking about how “mid” movies are a thousand times worse than the ones that are just plain bad. No, Austin Peters’ beauty industry thriller doesn’t fall into either of these two categories. That chat only came to mind because it’d been a while since something from the third, most rare category fell into my lap. The type that does what it wants to do so well that you won’t need to go around making excuses for it. Elizabeth Banks-starrer Skincare has got to be one of the most shrewd and grounded thrillers weaved around the dark side of Hollywood’s beauty town that’s ever been made. And when I tell you that there’s a big chance that Skincare’s ending is not what you think it is, I totally mean it.
