They are also both cult favorites among the Malayalam film lovers, who still watch them with admiration and nostalgia.

I walked into Calcutta’s Priya Cinema last Friday to watch “Pratidwandi” [The Adversary], Satyajit Ray’s film from 1970, expecting a roomful Ray-admirers who rushed to see Anik Dutta’s (deplorable) “Aparajito” earlier this year. And well, I was disappointed. There were just a handful of folks inside the auditorium, and I can’t tell how many of them watched the film seriously. Speaks volumes about the gradual cultural death of Calcutta which has been happening over the past decade. A few years ago, news of a Ray rerelease would’ve brought in masses who would liven up the theatre premises and its proximity, even if with flattery. Or maybe not, I’m too young to know.

Ever since the first look of Amitabh Bachchan was released from the film “Chehre” directed by Rumy Jafry the audience has been eagerly awaiting more. The anticipation for the film went even higher when the teaser and the trailer of the film was shared a few months back, for the mystery thriller that also stars Emraan Hashmi.
The makers of the mystery thriller film that stars Emraan Hashmi along with Big B, have resumed the final leg of the movie. The legendary Mr. Amitabh Bachchan is back in action to shoot for the video of the title track in Mumbai. The video is being directed by Kookie Gulati, who last directed the Abhishek Bachchan starrer “Big Bull”.
The coolest thing about this is that Mr. Bachchan has recited a poem written by Rumy Jafry for the title track, that has been put to tune by Shekhar Ravjiani of Vishal-Shekhar, with 107 musicians of Prague.

In Bengal, there are few personas whom you rarely dare to interlace with and one of them is Satyajit Ray’s iconic detective character Feluda. When Srijit Mujherji decided to create his adaptation of Feluda in a web series, the expectation became sky high so were the pens of critics who were ready to tear him apart for any mistakes. But Srijit had a winner under his sleeve with a slick adaptation of Ray’s master creation without deviating much from the original thoughts and narrative.
Chhinnamastar Abhishap revolves around a mystery related to the family of Mahesh Chowdhury (Dhritiman Chatterjee) and is placed in the beautifully scenic Hazaribag. It is better not to reveal the storyline as it dissolves the charm of a detective narrative.
Srijit Mukherji has decided to bring out the character of Feluda exactly as illustrated by Ray and it has been perfectly portrayed by Tota Roy Chowdhury.

Satyajit Ray's The Stranger (1991) is showing January 20 - February 18, 2020 in many countries around the world in the series A Journey into Indian Cinema.Bengalis, quite self-celebratory, build the foundations of their lives and societies on what they call culture and struggle. While culture encompasses their deep-seated love for cinema, sports, and the arts, struggle is more a comment on their Left-leaning ambitions which prevents them from ever becoming very rich. It is somewhat akin to the American usage of “hustle.”It is curious when Satyajit Ray (one of the reigning deities of that aforementioned culture) makes his last film The Stranger, in 1992, barely a few months before his death, holding a mirror to the community’s bourgeois hypocrisies and asking people to re-evaluate their priorities and revisit the definitions of culture, struggle, and pride embedded in their psyches. He wants people to educate their minds before falling into their echo chambers of unfounded pride.

Starring: Rahul Bose, Aditi Inaamdar, Dhritiman Chatterjee, Heeba Shah
Directed by Rahul Bose
At one crucial point in the telling of this simple and heartwarming tale of a tribal girl’s climb from the pits to Himalayan heights, Rahul Bose playing an upright bureaucrat, asks the little Andhra girl what is her purpose for climbing the Everest.
“I have no purpose. I just want to do it,” she tells her mentor honestly.
The simple confessional articulation exemplifies this film’s mood. So rich in its message, so far-flung in its intentions and purpose and yet so intimate in treatment and execution, Rahul Bose wins you over with his honesty of purpose.

An infatuated young boy who faced death for writing a love letter in a remote village is the subject of Chauranga. The film that won the Best Indian Film award at Mami last year and also the Grand Jury prize at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles Iffla, is slated for January 8th release next year.
Director Bikas Ranjan Mishra says, “Chauranga was prompted by a news story. The film is my understanding of the village life where a gruesome act of killing is possible in the name of preserving the sanctity of caste system. It’s a fictional re-telling of the actual incident set in a real village where I grew up and which I was very much a part of.”

If Vidya Balan starrer Kahaani has catapulted director Sujoy Ghosh into the big league, it has also benefited much-neglected single-screen theatres in the city that have done roaring business for three weeks now..I personally feel that Kahaani will do business worth Rs.3.15 crore to Rs.3.45 crore (over $670,000) in Kolkata. Bollywood films are hardly screened in rural areas, but the movie is really doing well in Kolkata and its outskirts,. said Arijit Dutta, proprietor of Priya Cinemas and vice-president of the Film Federation of India.Ever since multiplexes came up in the city, the footfall at single screen theatres had thinned drastically. But Vidya.s Kahaani, the gripping tale of a woman in search of her husband, is such a hit that it is single-handedly luring audiences to these halls.It.s a boon for single-screen theatres which are suddenly minting money. Some such theatres are Jaya-1, Malancha, Elite, Mitra,...

Bollywood isn’t exactly popular for good thrillers. Very few of those who claim to be of this genre actually manage to shock and surprise you with their storyline. Without doubt, Kahaani belongs to this elite group. From the moment of its amazing opening sequence you realize that this one is going to be an enjoyable roller coaster ride.
Sujoy Ghosh, who last awed us with his Jhankaar Beats, indeed brings to us ‘the mother of a story’ in Kahaani. Vidya Bagchi (Vidya Balan), heavily pregnant but determined, arrives in Kolkata in search of her missing husband. But was seems to be a simple missing person’s case turns out to be more twisted and complicated than expected. It’s Kolkata so yes, anything can happen. With things not what they seem to be and people not what they appear like, Vidya has to fight a lone battle and against time to find her husband.

Cast: Raima Sen, Riya Sen; Director: Rituparno Ghosh; Rating: 3 out of 5.
It’s Kashmakash in Hindi and Noukadubi in Bengali. Rituparno Ghosh, the director and Subhash Ghai, the producer, can debate about which one’s better till the cows come home. One thing is without dispute. Raima Sen was born to play a Rabindranath Tagore heroine, her classically beautiful face exuding both impishness and intelligence. She is a progressive liberal young woman, brought up by a father (the excellent Dhritiman Chatterjee) who adores her and whom she is loath to leave.
The relationship is intimate, delicate and yet.
