Two years on from being promoted to Co-Chairmen of WME, Christian Muirhead and Richard Weitz gave one of their first public interviews, talking about the future of the entertainment business, and in particular, AI, movies on streaming, the future of Paramount and Fast channel services such as Tubi.
“Despite the challenges and the disruption, we have real confidence in the power of art, so we feel really good about the future,” said Muirhead at the Ft’s Business of Entertainment conference.
Muirhead and Weitz were promoted in September 2022, succeeding Lloyd Braun. Muirhead came from the world of corporate communications, while Weitz was an agent.
“We got these jobs at the tail end of a lot of chaos, coming out of Covid, and then we stepped right into a little bit of chaos with the strikes. It’s been a little bit tumultuous. But for us, I think we have become...

It looks like Lorne Michaels won’t be enjoying quiet weekends at home anytime soon.
Yes, it’s been widely rumored that the Saturday Night Live creator would step down at the end of the show’s upcoming 50th season.
But in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Michaels reveals that he plans to continue helming SNL for the foreseeable future.
(Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images)
“[SNL is] always going to be described the same way, which is ‘uneven,’ and yet people have decided somehow that it’s important,” Michaels said.
“And so as long as it’s important and I can be useful, I’ll stay.”
Yes, it sounds like Michaels is planning to hang around for quite some time.
We suppose that’s good news if you’re a fan of SNL’s recent seasons.

It would be perfectly reasonable to assume that debuting at the tail end of the most wildly unpredictable presidential election in modern times would provide Saturday Night Live with all of the drama it can handle as it celebrates its hotly anticipated 50th season. But drama often lurks behind the scenes, too, as it has with the will-he-or-won’t-he retirement rumors surrounding TV maestro Lorne Michaels. In the fall of 2020, it was Michaels who appeared on Sunday Today and revealed that the 50th season would be his last. “By that point, I think I really deserve to wander off,” he told host Willie Geist.
The comment, which he then doubled down on in subsequent interviews, prompted a tireless succession of media stories about who might replace him. Tina Fey’s name emerged, along with that of Seth Meyers, Colin Jost and Michael Che. Then something happened as the milestone season...

Oh baby. You’d think lugging around a developing human being for nine months would be plenty of work on its own. But history has shown us it’s possible to be pregnant and perform stellar sketch comedy right up until the day you give birth.

The cast of Only Murders in the Building has become more and more star-studded over the years, and as it approaches its fourth season, the starpower has gone through the roof. The third season recruited Meryl Streep, who remains on board for Season 4, Paul Rudd, Jesse Williams, Ashley Park and more. The murder of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), who played Charles-Haden Savage’s stunt double on Brazzos at the end of Season 3 provided the cliffhanger to transition into a fourth installment.
Molly Shannon, Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis and Kumail Nanjiani were already confirmed as new cast members for the fourth season of the cozy murder mystery, but that wasn’t the end of new additions. Will Ferrell began crying Sunday night as director Josh Greenbaum hailed the love he and former Saturday Night Live writer Harper Steele bring to the screen in their new Netflix film Will & Harper.
In the film, Ferrell reconnects with his long-time friend, who for the first 61 years of her life lived as a man. Moving forward with a determination to be her most authentic self, Steele is invited by Ferrell to road trip across the U.S. With cameos from Tina Fey, Seth Meyers and Kristen Wiig, Greenbaum’s film is equal parts joyful and poignant. The tenderness of the pair’s relationship is moving and palpable as the pair navigate their friendship — and Harper, her newfound womanhood — through the various stops along the way.

After Lorne Michaels seemingly confirmed that Season 50 would be his last at the helm of SNL — good god, the man will be 80 at year’s end — pundits and show alumni are suddenly waving the “not so fast” flags. Just in case you were thinking about wagering on Michaels’ departure?
“It is dumb money to think that Lorne is stepping down after the 50th,” Seth Meyers told Matt Belloni this week on The Town podcast.
Belloni, who has devoted multiple podcasts to handicapping Michaels’ SNL successor, explained that he’s done a 180 on SNL’s future leader. “I thought for sure the 50th would be the big moment,” he said. “And (next) summer, he would say, ‘I’m gonna hang on Paul McCartney’s yacht, and I’m not coming back.’”

Loser follows Alice, a brilliant but troubled physicist, as she attempts to heal her trauma by using time travel. However, she gets caught in a twisty, cat-and-mouse game of murder and violence in New York City.
“With Loser the short, I wanted to examine that specific turbulence of your early 20s, when your hopes and fears seem magnified, and it’s easy to feel like a loser — until you realize how much bigger the world is, and how good we really have it. In the feature, these feelings spill over into a female-led time travel thriller,...

If vicious comedy roasts are back in vogue, no one told Emmy host Eugene Levy. The last thing he wants is to be cruel to his fellow celebrities. “It’s always hit me in a funny way when jokes are done at the expense of people who are nominated,” Levy told the Los Angeles Times, as reported by Variety. “They’ve put in the work, and it’s their night, really, and you have to have enough respect for the awards show itself. Otherwise, why are we here?”
So if Levy isn’t going to stick it to Shogun and The Bear, how is he approaching hosting duties? “Just paying tribute to television, certainly the nominees, but to the medium that gave us both our starts,” he explained.
Will the ceremony will turn into a schmoozefest? Levy’s son and Schitt’s Creek co-star Dan will be sharing host duties — and...

It looks like “fetch” really is not going to happen, and Lacey Chabert, who memorably portrayed Gretchen Wieners in the teen classic Mean Girls, should stop trying to make it happen — according to her daughter, who naturally had no idea what the term referenced.

Many a comedian has gotten their start or boosted their career on Saturday Night Live. The sketch television show has provided commentary on historical happenings and popular culture since October 1975. The 50th anniversary of the series approaches, as does the 2024 presidential election, full of commentary opportunities and sketches.
While hosts and musical guests — in some cases the same celebrity who pulls double duty — keep the show current with actors promoting works and musicians promoting albums, a group of cast members has always been the staple backdrop for the rotation of guests. Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis as well as Elf star Will Ferrell came up on SNL as did Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Actors like Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Billy Crystal. Martin Short and more contributed to the laughter of the sketch comedy show. Even late night hosts Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon appeared in skits.

NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” has now won an astonishing 101 Emmy Awards, breaking its own massive record from the 1976 ceremony through 2024. As it now heads into a 50th season in a few weeks, the variety series took six trophies at Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmys and has three more nominations at Sunday’s event. It also has two more opportunities at next week’s Primetime event (Bowen Yang for supporting actor and Variety Scripted Series). The next closest show in second place is “Game of Thrones” with 59 overall.
At Saturday’s ceremony, it triumphed for hairstyling, makeup, production design and lighting design. Technically, it was technical direction category that was the 100th victory. Liz Patrick then won the 101st Emmy for Best Variety Series Directing.

Before each Saturday Night Live performance, Kristen Wiig would light a candle, she once told Kelly Clarkson. Amy Poehler shared her own pre-show ritual with Clarkson this week. “When Don Pardo would say my name,” Poehler explained, “I used to just take a moment and close my eyes for about a split second. Because that's about all the time you have at SNL. Molly Shannon used to do that — she told me about it so then I did it.”
Aww, sweet. But not as fun as another SNL tradition that Poehler revealed. It turns out the Parks and Rec star got Shannon’s office after she left the show, a fact evidenced by the scribbles Shannon left on the room’s walls. “Everyone would just kind of leave their name like summer camp,” Poehler said. “You'd write your name on the wall.”

How does one become one of the most celebrated and commercially successful comedy multi-hyphenates of all time? Surely not by dropping out of college before receiving their bachelor’s degree and joining an improv comedy group, right?
Wrong. Thus was the journey for Adam McKay, the immensely talented and successful director, writer, and producer behind such classics as ‘Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,’ ‘Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,’ ‘Step Brothers,’ ‘The Other Guys,’ ‘The Big Short,’ and ‘Vice.’ McKay has had a fascinating and very versatile career, going from directing Will Ferrell at his absolute best, making people’s stomachs hurt from laughing too hard, to tackling academy-award nominated films revolving around climate change, corrupt politicians, and the recession of 2008. Lacey Chabert had "no idea" she would still be making Hallmark movies. The 41-year-old actress has just finished filming her 40th film for the television network but admitted as she heads up 'Celebrations with Lacey Chabert' for the station that when she did 'Elevator Girl' in 2010 she didn't know she would still be with the company today. She told Collider: "I had no idea when I did my first hallmark movie, 'Elevator Girl', many years ago, that I'd be sitting here talking about now an unscripted show. They've all meant so much to me. People say that the movies bring them joy. I hope people realize how much joy they brought to my life."I love telling these stories. I think they're all very relatable, and we hope to create characters that our audience can see themselves in and to tell stories about the human...

One of the buzziest films of the 2024 Telluride Film Festival has been the upcoming Sony feature based on the first ever live performance of the pop culture staple “Saturday Night Live.” What no one saw coming was that one of the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players, Bill Murray, would introduce the film alongside director Jason Reitman, who were both welcomed with a standing ovation of massively supportive fans and industry insiders.
At 11:30pm on October 11, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television and pop culture forever. “Saturday Night” is based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of what was originally called “NBC’s Saturday Night” (because a competing show with Howard Cosell had the “Saturday Night Live” title). Full of humor, chaos, and the magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t,...

Nikki Glaser is perhaps best known for being a comedian and an actress — and now a Golden Globes host — but did you know she’s also an accomplished singer? “It was the first dream I ever had in wanting to be a performer,” she revealed in 2022 after being voted out of “The Masked Singer” while wearing a Snowstorm costume (watch above). Glaser’s musical chops brought her all the way to the Semi-Finals during Season 8 of Fox’s wild and wacky reality TV, but alas, she was bested by Amber Riley as Harp and Wilson Phillips as Lambs.
As the hilarious Roast legend explained at the time, her dream of singing “was squashed at such a young age and it just became something that was not attainable to me.” She added, “When this opportunity came up, it was so perfect. I think what held me back was the fact that...

New Girl is definitely one of the most heartwarmingly funny series about friends and love created by Elizabeth Meriwether. The Fox comedy series follows the chirpy and naive Jessica as she moves into a loft with 3 guys who are equally as quirky and weird. New Girl stars Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris, Damon Wayans Jr., Nasim Pedrad, and Megan Fox. New Girl lasted for seven seasons ending its run in 2018, so if you loved the unending optimism, quirky personalities, and a group of young friends trying to find their way here are some similar shows you should check out next.

Nikki Glaser‘s year just keeps getting better: The standout from Netflix’s “The Roast of Tom Brady,” nominated for two Emmys for her HBO special, will officially be hosting the 2025 Golden Globes.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Golden Globes. It’s one of my favorite nights of television and now I get a front-row seat,” said Glaser in a statement. “The Golden Globes is not only a huge night for TV and film, but also for comedy. It’s one of the few times that show business not only allows, but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least I hope so).. It’s an exciting, yet challenging gig because it’s live, unpredictable and in front of Hollywood’s biggest stars (who also might be getting wasted while seated next to their recent exes).”

Midway through the fourth season of Only Murders in the Building, NYPD Detective Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) complains once again about how true-crime podcasters Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) keep stumbling their way into and through murder investigations. Her objection isn’t just to these three civilians consistently putting themselves in danger and interfering with the work of real police, but with the shoddiness of their sleuthing, which this time around has produced so many suspects that they need multiple murder boards to fit them all.

The Oscar 2025 needs a host, seeing as the man who has been at the helm the most over the last ten years is over it.
Jimmy Kimmel announced over the summer in 2024 that fans hoping to see him host the Academy Awards next year would be left wanting.
Kimmel is out, and so is the comedian most assumed was next in line for the gig.
So, who will host the Oscars in 2025?

In effect, “Only Murders in the Building” is streaming entertainment’s version of a charm offensive. The multi-genre, multi-generational Hulu original has something — and someone — for everyone. Its three leads are, for the most part, inherently likable. Steve Martin and Martin Short have been building goodwill for decades, and Selena Gomez has been accruing a loyal fanbase of young’uns since her purple-clad co-star was Barney. Sprinkle in affable recurring guests like Nathan Lane, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Jackie Hoffman, Jayne Houdyshell, and Tina Fey — all in the first few seasons — and “the Building” becomes a hot spot for big-name talent.
But the series’ intrinsic appeal goes well beyond its popular cast. A perpetual fall/winter season provides plenty of occasions for warm and cozy looks. The Arconia’s Upper West Side origins offer inspiring interior design opportunities. Heck, even the story allows viewers to pick and choose what to focus...

Who says you need a project to appear on late night? On Thursday, Amy Poehler swung by “Late Night with Seth Meyers” without any projects to promote, but to instead talk about the books she’s been reading this year and to make Meyers laugh so hard he was incapable of sound.
The memorable moment happened roughly seven-and-a-half minutes into the pair’s interview. While talking about Virginia Woolf’s “A Room of One’s Own,” Meyers excused himself to sneeze.
“Oh my god, a sneeze! Everybody stand up!” Poehler cheerfully said.
As the audience cheered and jumped to their feet, Meyers buried his head in his hands, unable to contain his laughter. During the roughly 30 seconds he was laughing, only a couple of his chuckles could be heard. His response caused Poehler to burst into laughter too.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? Easy to say until you’re the one Saturday Night Live is mocking.
What happens when SNL impressionists are forced to reckon with the consequences of their comedy? Lucky for the comics, most spoofed celebrities enjoy being in on the joke. But as you’ll see in these five examples, that isn’t always the case…

If you don’t count Goat Boy — and who does, really? — Joe Pesci was Breuer’s most popular character. Breuer played him nine times as host of the fictional Joe Pesci Show, portraying the actor as the Mafia goon he played in movies like Goodfellas.
“I grew up with some characters so I know that world exists,” Breuer explained on the Opie & Anthony Show. And when Pesci showed up for a cameo on SNL, he lived up to that reputation during a backstage visit with Breuer.

In 2002, author Rosalind Wiseman published a self-help book entitled “Queen Bees and Wannabes,” aimed at helping parents of high school-aged girls deal with the vicious effects of bullying on their daughters. Mad Men alum John Slattery will be leading the yet-to-be-announced cast of the drama from Lionsgate Television and Blumhouse Television that counts Grisham, along with writer Michael Seitzman (Code Black, Intelligence), Jason Richman (Stumptown, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon), David Gernert and Jason Blum as executive producers. Richman and Seitzman co-wrote the pilot.
Slattery will play Leo F. Drummond, one of Grisham’s most iconic characters, a legendary lion of the courtroom and senior partner at Tinley Britt, the powerful firm that Rainmaker protagonist Rudy Baylor is up against.
The logline reads: “Fresh out of law school, Rudy Baylor goes head-to-head with courtroom lion Leo Drummond (Slettery) as well as his law school girlfriend. Rudy, along with his boss and her disheveled paralegal, uncover two connected conspiracies surrounding the mysterious death of their client’s son.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the limited races that “Baby Reindeer” seems poised to dominate. Or is it?
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re entering the final stretch before Emmys voting begins and our wheel o’ columns has swung around to the limited series race — aka “Just how many categories will ‘Baby Reindeer’ reign supreme in?” Let’s start with the easy ones: The Netflix juggernaut that has deftly compartmentalized its off-screen controversy is basically assured of winning Best Limited Series, Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress for Jessica Gunning, and Best Movie/Limited Writing for creator and star Richard Gadd. If “Baby Reindeer” somehow lost in any of those categories, I’d argue it would count as the biggest upset of the 2024 Emmys race.
