A faux-elegant fable about how not to resolve your differences, made for dudes, by dudes, “The Duel” arrives at a time of intense division (and no small amount of scrutiny over gun use) in America. Releasing as a one-night-only screening via Iconic Events on July 31 before hitting streaming in August, the edgy comedy looks sharp enough, but lands like a rapier with a cork on it, as Dylan Sprouse and Callan McAuliffe play longtime besties who try to settle a dispute the old-timey way … by blowing each other away with pistols.
“The Duel” feels like a pretty clever idea at first, to the extent I found myself wondering why nobody had thought of it before, only to wind up asking why its two writer-directors didn’t think of it more. As it happens, my library contains no fewer than four books called “The Duel,” the shortest of which (by Joseph Conrad) runs a slender 112 pages,...

Justin Matthews and Luke Spencer Roberts make their directorial debut with The Duel, an offbeat satire that explores the ridiculous lengths some will go for a misguided sense of honor. The film stars Dylan Sprouse and Callan McAuliffe as former best friends Colin and Woody, whose bond is shattered after Colin engages in an affair with Woody’s girlfriend.
Seeking to settle the score, Woody drags Colin along on a strange road trip that leads them to a mysterious estate, where an eccentric fellow named Christof, played brilliantly by Patrick Warburton, encourages the men to settle their dispute through an old-fashioned duel to the death.
As Colin and Woody embark down this absurd path of machismo one-upmanship, their loyal friends Sam and Kevin are pulled along, forced to take sides in the dispute. But beneath the darkly comedic surface of two dumb guys fighting over a girl, Matthews and Roberts...

The directorial debut of Justin Matthews and Luke Spencer Roberts (writers of Prime Video’s recent rom-com Upgraded), The Duel, is one of the more star-studded independent films in recent memory, boasting a cast led by recognizable faces like Dylan Sprouse and Patrick Warburton. Although it has thin characters and occasionally repetitive humor, The Duel is an entertaining satire that is just provocative enough to work.
The Duel follows two former best friends who find themselves at a crossroads when one sleeps with the other’s girlfriend. This leads them to a mysterious estate, where they engage in a ritual duel to the death. Matthews and Roberts take some very ambitious swings with their directorial debut, and while they don’t all work, it’s at least an intriguing work of satire.

"All of this is crazy." Lionsgate Movies has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy called The Duel, marking the feature directorial debut of two young filmmakers Justin Matthews and Luke Spencer Roberts. This originally premiered at the 2023 Mammoth Film Festival last year and it played at a few other small festivals. Not to be confused with the 2016 western also called The Duel with Woody Harrelson. In this one, when Woody (no connection to Harrelson) finds out his best friend has been sleeping with his girlfriend, he challenges him to a duel, taking their friend group across the border to a mysterious and stunning estate. When two of their friends join the act, the once inseparable group of men inch closer to the day of destiny and test the bonds of their relationship until the moment of no return. The film stars Dylan Sprouse (who also executive produced) & Callan McAuliffe,...

Peter Morgan’s new play Patriots, now on Broadway, opens with an awareness of its audience. “In the West you have no idea,” Boris Berezovksy (an excellent Michael Stuhlbarg) says through a voiceover. “You think of Russia as a cold, bleak place, full of hardship and cruelty.” The stage is bare, and the oligarch, who played an instrumental role in Vladimir Putin’s rise to power, speaks to us from a liminal space. He goes on to describe the beauty of his country, Russian music, the sounds of children laughing in the streets and the taste of ice cream on a cold day.
When the stage comes into view (set design by Miriam Buether, lighting design by Jack Knowles), it’s 1955. Berezovsky is a schoolboy gifted in mathematics. A teacher urges his parents — congenial and full of quips — to push their son. “Anyone can be a doctor, Mrs. Berezovsky,” says...

Netflix is about to make its Broadway producing debut, joining the team of Peter Morgan’s upcoming play Patriots.
The play from the creator of the Netflix signature series The Crown arrives on Broadway April 1 for a 12-week engagement following a record-breaking run at London’s Almeida Theatre and a sold-out 12-week West End transfer at the Noël Coward Theatre. Opening night at Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre is April 22.
The play is set in 1991 after the fall of the Soviet Union and chronicles the rise of oligarchs like billionaire Boris Berezovsky (Michael Stuhlbarg) and a little-known deputy mayor of St. Petersburg named Vladimir Putin (Will Keen). When an eventual successor to President Boris Yeltsin is needed, Berezovsky turns to Putin, whose ruthless rise threatens Berezovsky’s reign and sets off a confrontation between the two powerful, fatally flawed men.

Shaggy Manhattan auteur Onur Tukel’s latest film isn’t entirely new: Originally conceived as an ongoing TV series, “Black Magic for White Boys” premiered at Tribeca a couple of years ago as several preliminary episodes. But when prospects didn’t pan out in that format, he shot additional footage to create the current feature. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the result still has a loose, episodic feel, with a somewhat casual attitude toward the concept of “narrative arc” — qualities not at all at odds with Tukel’s prior output.

In a world where white Americans start feeling unjustly marginalized as the stranglehold of power they’ve possessed in this country since its inception begins to show cracks in a bid for true equality that they continue fighting tooth and nail against, they’ll steal whatever advantage they can to retain the status quo. They must since their success arrives from exploitation of labor from the lower class. They accrue a nest egg of profit, keep employees under thumb with the threat of firing them, and sit on their laurels buying property and investments in ways that optimize loopholes in the tax system. And anyone who gets in the way is simply removed from the equation via corruption, political clout, and for-profit healthcare. They wield their privilege with a magic wand.
So how does writer/director Onur Tukel help their quest to maintain world domination? He gives them real magic.

Though major studios used to crank them out by the truckload, today the movie musical is a fairly infrequent occurrence — not just because they’re commercially risky but because the genre itself is an inherently ambitious undertaking. Ranging from “Once” to Damien Chazelle’s pre-“La La Land” romance “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench,” there have been some moderately successful attempts at making indie musicals on a micro-budget, but the question still lingers of whether audiences are willing to accept a modern movie in which people sing out their emotions.
In a risky departure from a résumé otherwise dominated by broad comedy, Josh Klausner gives it a stab with “Wanderland.” Different though it may be from his 1999 debut “The 4th Floor” — a quasi-horror thriller with surreal touches — this oddball effort is more an exercise in low-key quirkiness set in a slightly alternative universe where everything but our protagonist is a little “off.

Where’s your freaking God now? No, really. We want to know.
When AMC’s supernatural adventure series “Preacher” returns in June, the hunt will be on for God, and we don’t mean in the spiritual sense. The second season has been expanded from Season 1’s 10 episodes to 13.

Elsewhere on the casting docket, Preacher season 2 has also made room in its rank for six newcomers: Noah Taylor, Pip Torrens, Julie Ann Emery, Malcolm Barrett, Ronald Guttman and Justin Prentice of 13 Reasons Why. If the opening season of Preacher drew flak for straying too far from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s irreverent, jet-black source material, the show’s second coming promises to align itself more with the cult comic book series that first clawed its way onto the scene in ’95.
Not only has Dominic Cooper teased a radically different tone ahead of Preacher season 2, but the show’s braintrust – namely producers Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin – has kept one ear to the ground to take heed of fan feedback.
Following up on last year’s explosive finale, Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga) and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) set off on a divine mission to locate God. It’s a quest that takes our bickering trio into America’s Deep South, and the first teasers for Preacher‘s second season have already teed up a road trip for the books.
