The directorial debut of Justin Matthews and Luke Spencer Roberts (writers of Prime Video’s recent rom-com Upgraded), The Duel, is one of the more star-studded independent films in recent memory, boasting a cast led by recognizable faces like Dylan Sprouse and Patrick Warburton. Although it has thin characters and occasionally repetitive humor, The Duel is an entertaining satire that is just provocative enough to work.

The Duel follows two former best friends who find themselves at a crossroads when one sleeps with the other’s girlfriend. This leads them to a mysterious estate, where they engage in a ritual duel to the death. Matthews and Roberts take some very ambitious swings with their directorial debut, and while they don’t all work, it’s at least an intriguing work of satire.

Exclusive: Lionsgate and Grindstone Entertainment have acquired rights to the comedy The Duel, exec produced by and starring Dylan Sprouse (Beautiful Disaster), in North America, as well as all other English-speaking and Latin American territories.

Marking Sprouse’s first project as EP, the film will hit theaters via Lionsgate and Iconic Releasing at the end of July. In support of its release, a number of cast members will be in attendance this weekend at the Indy 500 parade, which will include a car and racing helmets themed to the film. Those expected to attend include Sprouse, Hart Denton (Riverdale), Maria Gabriela de Faria (upcoming Superman), Rachel Matthews (Frozen II) and Christian McGaffney (Simón).

Marking the directorial debut of Justin Matthews & Luke Spencer Roberts, the co-writers of Amazon’s Upgraded, who also penned the script, The Duel is about a modern friend group falling apart and the craziest way to deal with it: by bringing back dueling.

Netflix is about to make its Broadway producing debut, joining the team of Peter Morgan’s upcoming play Patriots.

The play from the creator of the Netflix signature series The Crown arrives on Broadway April 1 for a 12-week engagement following a record-breaking run at London’s Almeida Theatre and a sold-out 12-week West End transfer at the Noël Coward Theatre. Opening night at Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre is April 22.

The play is set in 1991 after the fall of the Soviet Union and chronicles the rise of oligarchs like billionaire Boris Berezovsky (Michael Stuhlbarg) and a little-known deputy mayor of St. Petersburg named Vladimir Putin (Will Keen). When an eventual successor to President Boris Yeltsin is needed, Berezovsky turns to Putin, whose ruthless rise threatens Berezovsky’s reign and sets off a confrontation between the two powerful, fatally flawed men.

Saban Films has acquired the North American rights to “Sister of the Groom,” a comedy set at a wedding starring “Clueless” star Alicia Silverstone, the distributor announced Thursday.

“Sister of the Groom,” which was written and directed by Amy Miller Gross, follows a woman (Silverstone) who tries to put a halt to her brother’s marriage to a much younger French woman over the course of their wedding weekend in the Hamptons. Saban Films will announce plans to release the film at a later date.

Tom Everett Scott, Jake Hoffman and Mathilde Ollivier co-star in the film. Charlie Bewley, Noah Silver, Julie Engelbrecht, Ronald Guttman and the late Mark Blum round out the key cast.

Shaggy Manhattan auteur Onur Tukel’s latest film isn’t entirely new: Originally conceived as an ongoing TV series, “Black Magic for White Boys” premiered at Tribeca a couple of years ago as several preliminary episodes. But when prospects didn’t pan out in that format, he shot additional footage to create the current feature. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the result still has a loose, episodic feel, with a somewhat casual attitude toward the concept of “narrative arc” — qualities not at all at odds with Tukel’s prior output.

This ensemble comedy with a silly supernatural angle, centered on a decrepit Off Off Broadway theater, won’t be its maker’s belated breakthrough. But for those who grok his amiably misanthropic, offhand brand of humor, it will comprise another satisfyingly idiosyncratic chapter in a singular career that carries forward a trail previously blazed by the likes of Woody Allen, Henry Jaglom and...

In a world where white Americans start feeling unjustly marginalized as the stranglehold of power they’ve possessed in this country since its inception begins to show cracks in a bid for true equality that they continue fighting tooth and nail against, they’ll steal whatever advantage they can to retain the status quo. They must since their success arrives from exploitation of labor from the lower class. They accrue a nest egg of profit, keep employees under thumb with the threat of firing them, and sit on their laurels buying property and investments in ways that optimize loopholes in the tax system. Tom Everett Scott (13 Reasons Why), Jake Hoffman (The Wolf of Wall Street), Mathilde Ollivier (Overlord), Noah Silver (Tyrant), Mark Blum (Mozart In The Jungle), Julie Engelbrecht (The Last Witch Hunter), and Ronald Guttman (Preacher) also co-star in the film from Mandorla Productions, LLC.

Though major studios used to crank them out by the truckload, today the movie musical is a fairly infrequent occurrence — not just because they’re commercially risky but because the genre itself is an inherently ambitious undertaking. Ranging from “Once” to Damien Chazelle’s pre-“La La Land” romance “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench,” there have been some moderately successful attempts at making indie musicals on a micro-budget, but the question still lingers of whether audiences are willing to accept a modern movie in which people sing out their emotions.

In a risky departure from a résumé otherwise dominated by broad comedy, Josh Klausner gives it a stab with “Wanderland.” Different though it may be from his 1999 debut “The 4th Floor” — a quasi-horror thriller with surreal touches — this oddball effort is more an exercise in low-key quirkiness set in a slightly alternative universe where everything but our protagonist is a little “off.

When AMC’s supernatural adventure series “Preacher” returns in June, the hunt will be on for God, and we don’t mean in the spiritual sense. The second season has been expanded from Season 1’s 10 episodes to 13.

If you might recall, at the end of Season 1, Annville was thrown into chaos when they discovered that God wasn’t going to show up after all. Even worse, he had gone missing, and even the angels didn’t know where he was. If the opening season of Preacher drew flak for straying too far from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s irreverent, jet-black source material, the show’s second coming promises to align itself more with the cult comic book series that first clawed its way onto the scene in ’95.

Not only has Dominic Cooper teased a radically different tone ahead of Preacher season 2, but the show’s braintrust – namely producers Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin – has kept one ear to the ground to take heed of fan feedback.

Following up on last year’s explosive finale, Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga) and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) set off on a divine mission to locate God. It’s a quest that takes our bickering trio into America’s Deep South, and the first teasers for Preacher‘s second season have already teed up a road trip for the books.

Spider-Man: Homecoming may be the current cover star of Empire, but there’s plenty more content to be found within the pages of the magazine’s latest issue.

Case in point: today’s all-new action shot for Preacher season 2, which places Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga) and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) behind the wheel as they set off on a road trip to find God. Set to premiere via AMC late next month, the second season will purportedly feature a radically different tone than the first.
