Slim Pickens spent the early part of his career as a real cowboy and the latter part playing cowboys, and he is best remembered for a single "cowboy" image: that of bomber pilot Maj. "King" Kong waving his cowboy hat rodeo-style as he rides a nuclear bomb onto its target in the great black comedy Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964). Born in Kingsburg, near Fresno in California's Central Valley, he spent much of his boyhood in nearby Hanford, where he began rodeoing at the age of 12. Over the next two decades he toured the country on the rodeo circuit, becoming a highly-paid and well-respected rodeo clown, a job that entailed enormous danger. In 1950, at the age of 31, Slim married Margaret Elizabeth Harmon and that same year he was given a role in a western, Rocky Mountain (1950). He quickly found a niche in both comic and villainous roles in that genre. With his hoarse voice and pronounced western twang, he was not always easy to cast outside the genre, but when he was, as in "Dr. Strangelove", the results were often memorable. He died in 1983 after a long and courageous battle against a brain tumor. He was survived by his wife Margaret and children.

Juan Romero struggled for decades with a memory he could not escape. Still haunted by what happened just after midnight on June 5, 1968, when he was on duty as a busboy at the Ambassador Hotel on Wilshire Boulevard near Koreatown. That was the night an assassin took aim at Robert F. Kennedy, a candidate for president of the United States. Romero, just 17 at the time, squatted next to the fallen U.S. senator, cradled Kennedy's head, and tried to help him up before realizing how gravely wounded Kennedy was.

Romero, who had moved to Los Angeles from Mexico seven years earlier. He became an Ambassador busboy on the advice of his strict stepfather, who worked at the hotel and wanted Romero to be sure to stay out of trouble on the streets of East Los Angeles. The next night, after Kennedy won California's Democratic primary and made a victory speech, he retreated through the kitchen pantry area and Romero pushed through the crowd to congratulate him. He said that just as he shook Kennedy's hand, the shots were fired.

News photographers captured pictures of Romero next to the bloodied Kennedy - images that would be seen all over the world. "Is everybody OK?" Kennedy asked. Yes, he said. "Everything will be OK," Kennedy said before losing consciousness. Romero put a rosary in Kennedy's hand.

Royal Robbins (February 3, 1935 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia - March 14, 2017 in Modesto, California) was an American rock climber and mountaineer. He was one of the figures of the golden age of the conquest of the Big Walls in Yosemite in the 1960s. Along with Yvon Chouinard, he was one of the promoters of the clean climbing ethic in the early 1960s. 1970.

Royal Robbins first worked in a bank, then set up a business importing and selling mountain equipment and finally devoted himself to climbing. He is also the inventor of a bag hoisting system using pulleys and jumars.

He acquired his technique and his style on the Tahquitz cliff near Los Angeles and quickly imposed his supremacy in Yosemite, where almost all major routes had been climbed by Robbins, including in 1957 the North-West Face of Half Dome in Yosemite, with Mike Sherrick and Jerry Gallwas: first degree VI in the United States. In 1960, he made the second ascent of The Nose at El Capitan in Yosemite. In 1961, the first ascent of Salathé Wall at El Capitan, with Tom Frost and Chuck Pratt. In 1962, he opened the Directe Américaine on the west face of Les Drus in the Mont Blanc massif in France, with Gary Hemming.

In 1971, Robbins made with Don Lauria the second ascent of the Wall of Early Morning Light (also called Dawn Wall), opened the previous year by his rival Warren Harding and Dean Caldwell, and which had sparked controversy because of the 300 peaks at Used expansions. Robbins originally intended to "clear the way" by cutting expansions as you climb. After two lengths, Robbins stopped because, according to Lauria, "the standard of aid climbing was much higher than he would have expected from Harding or Caldwell and, of course, because it was so horribly long cut off all those damn spits"

Royal Robbins died on March 14, 2017 at the age of 82.
