Orange Is the New Black returns June 17. The show has rightly earned praise for its nuanced, moving portrayals of female inmates of all stripes, and serves as a reminder of how far things have come in terms of images of incarcerated women on screen. In appreciation of series creator Jenji Kohan and the cast and crew's elevated take on the subject matter, we're looking back at the bleak and often exploitative history of the strange "women's prison drama" film genre. The portrayal of women in prison can be split - as most of Hollywood can - into two periods: Pre- and Post-Code.

Danièle Delorme and Jean Gabin in 'Deadlier Than the Male.' Danièle Delorme movies (See previous post: “Danièle Delorme: 'Gigi' 1949 Actress Became Rare Woman Director's Muse.”) “Every actor would like to make a movie with Charles Chaplin or René Clair,” Danièle Delorme explains in the filmed interview (ca. 1960) embedded further below, adding that oftentimes it wasn't up to them to decide with whom they would get to work. Yet, although frequently beyond her control, Delorme managed to collaborate with a number of major (mostly French) filmmakers throughout her six-decade movie career. Aside from her Jacqueline Audry films discussed in the previous Danièle Delorme article, below are a few of her most notable efforts – usually playing naive-looking young women of modest means and deceptively inconspicuous sexuality, whose inner character may or may not match their external appearance. Ouvert pour cause d'inventaire (“Open for Inventory Causes,” 1946), an unreleased, no-budget comedy notable...

Adding to its Monday night original suspense series "Fatal Attraction," TV One is launching a new hour-long series, titled "For My Man," premiering on Monday, Sept. 7 at 10pm Et. The series will tackle "the outrageous and shocking stories of women who have been arrested for a crime they committed in the name of love." As Piper Kerman, author of "Orange Is the New Black: My Year in A Women's Prison," testified at the Aug. 4 Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing, women - particularly women of color - are the fastest growing population in the criminal justice system. Many of them - of the more than 200,000 women...

Life in lockup is about to test the faith of many of your favorite "Orange Is the New Black" inmates, including the increasingly less self-defeating Taystee and the allegiance-shifting Big Boo.
The actresses behind those two fan favorite characters -- Danielle Brooks and Lea DeLaria, respectively -- admit they've been sworn to secrecy about how the third season of the Netflix sensation will shake down, but they risked a stint in showbiz solitary to offer some tantalizing clues about what's in store for Taystee and Big Boo, along with revealing their own off-screen experiences with prison life and prison-themed entertainment.
On what's ahead for their characters:
Danielle Brooks: I feel like Season 3 for Taystee is another whirlwind of change. She keeps growing every season, and she dealt a lot with Vee last season. And this season, we're figuring out how she's dealing with Vee being there -- or not...

It's official, Jason Biggs will not be returning to "Orange is the New Black" next season! The actor -- who plays Larry Bloom, aka Piper Chapman's (Taylor Schilling) fiance -- has confirmed that he will not be on Season 3 of the hit Netflix show. "They're not focusing on Larry at the moment," he revealed to New York's Daily News. "Larry will not be in season 3. But there's always a possibility he can come back." We have a feeling the "American Pie" star will be back though. The series is based on Piper Kerman's memoir, "Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison," which details Kerman's real-life experiences behind bars. Kerman is married to Larry Smith (who "Oitnb" Larry Bloom's character is based on), so we'd bet that Jason will return ... eventually. What do you think of Biggs' news? Tell toofab in the comment section below...

Book Deals: $40 Off Kindle, Plus 'Unbroken', 'Fault in Our Stars', 'Maze Runner', 'Divergent' & More
I know this isn't exactly movie related, but it sort of is considering four of the six books Amazon is currently offering for only $2.99 each were adapted into movies that were (or will be) released this year -- Divergent, The Maze Runner, The Fault in Our Stars and Unbroken. The other two were adapted into television shows so. However, beyond the classification, it's just a great deal and it gets even better if you don't yet have a Kindle or are looking to get someone one for Christmas. So, before you scroll down to look at the sale items, Amazon has currently bundled their Amazon Prime membership with their Kindle product, offering people a chance to subscribe to Prime and if you purchase a Kindle with the same order, you will get $40 off that Kindle. This works for any Kindle model, including the soon-to-be-released Voyage, the Paperwhite, standard Kindle, Kindle Fire and Fire TV.

After months of teasers, trailers, and bloodstained images, Orange Is The New Black has finally returned to Netflix. Creator Jenji Kohan has rolled out the second season of her prison dramedy, with 13 new episodes joining the 13 that made the show's first season into one of Netflix's biggest hits. After the first season ended on a cliffhanger, the first episode of season two marches protagonist Piper Chapman off to an unfamiliar location, away from the colorful characters who populate the Litchfield Women's Prison. Pulling the viewer out of familiar territory is a risky gambit for a season debut, though as a review in Slate explains, Netfix's binge-friendly format allowed Kohan to pull it off. "Orange’s delivery method—instead of waiting a week, just click—turns the premiere into a kind of winking provocation," explains author Willa Paskin. "Just try not to watch the next one." Other reviews claim that season...

Oscar-nominated actor who brought sensitivity and warmth to her most famous role in Imitation of Life
From its earliest days, Hollywood, which has always lagged behind wider social advances, limited the roles of black actors to stock, wide-eyed cowards, simpletons or servants, often referred to as "uncles" and "mammies". Juanita Moore, who has died aged 99, suffered from this limitation by having to play maids throughout most of her long career. However, Moore could have echoed what Hattie McDaniel, the first African-American actor to win an Academy Award, once said: "Why should I complain about making $700 a week playing a maid? If I didn't, I'd be making $7 a week being one."
Where McDaniel as Mammy, Scarlett O'Hara's lovable, sassy servant in Gone With the Wind (1939) was the apotheosis of the black maid, Moore's Oscar-nominated portrayal of Annie Johnson, housekeeper to the glamorous Broadway star Lora Meredith (Lana Turner) in Douglas Sirk...

Stylish film noir star known for her role in Lady in the Lake
I was kissed by Audrey Totter. At least, I share that experience with anybody who has seen Lady in the Lake (1947), when Totter plants her lips on the subjective camera, the surrogate for Robert Montgomery as Philip Marlowe. The film, directed by Montgomery, and based on the Raymond Chandler novel, was shot so that the whole story is seen literally through Marlowe's eyes.
The role of the gold-digging tigress magazine editor Adrienne Fromsett, who hires the private eye to find the missing wife of her publisher, was a breakthrough for Totter, who has died aged 95. Previously, she had been in a dozen movies, her hair colour and accent varying so much from film to film that she dubbed herself "the feminine Lon Chaney of the MGM lot".
Montgomery chose Totter for the part because of her versatility as a radio actor.

Legendary Spanish-born international film and music icon has died Sara Montiel, also known as either Sarita Montiel or, at times, Saritisima, was one of the Spanish-speaking world's biggest stars. She died on Monday, April 8, apparently of "natural causes" at her house in Madrid's district of Salamanca. She was 85 years old. Earlier today, a cortege driving through the streets of Madrid was attended (and applauded) by thousands of mourning fans. Montiel was born on March 10, 1928; according to online sources, her birth name was María Antonia Alejandra Vicenta Elpidia Isadora Abad Fernández; her father was a small farmer and her mother was beauty products salesperson. She left behind her poverty-stricken childhood, spending her days in the streets of her small village while dreaming of Spanish film star Imperio Argentina, after moving to Madrid in her mid-teens. Diction and singing lessons followed. Eventually, she started appearing in films, landing two roles in 1944 releases:...
