Make a jug of sweet tea, y’all, and enjoy some summer viewing with these “Hicksploitation” films from the ‘60s—over-the-top exploitation films that targeted cultural stereotypes of rural Southern culture. Old men cast their eyes on young women, moonshine brews in the swamps, young farm hands, town floozies … This pair of slice-of-life films transports you to the best of the backwoods!
Available 25th June 2024, the special Backwoods Double Feature collector’s edition—on Blu-ray and DVD from Film Masters—features Common Law Wife (1963) and Jennie, Wife/Child (1968), newly restored versions of two films originally released by Something Weird Video in 2003.
From a genre that doesn’t often see a lot of TLC, these films get a glow-up that provides a whole new appreciation for backwoods hillbillies. Both films are from original 35mm archival elements—with supplemental 1080p footage in Common Law Wife—for an upgraded viewing experience, on Blu-ray for the first time.

The Prank. Those delightful, seemingly harmless little tricks we play on others for a laugh. But tread carefully, for the line between playful jest and horrific disaster is perilously thin. These seven horror movies with pranks gone wrong take the concept of the lighthearted prank and twist it into something lethal. We’re talking about more than just whoopee cushions and fake spiders; these are pranks with consequences so severe they’re measured in screams, not giggles.
From high school gags that end in gorefests to sinister plots with deadly outcomes, each prank horror movie in this list shows how quickly the fun can turn fatal. So, prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of deceit and dread, where the next laugh might be your last, and the punchline is always death.

Lane died Friday at her home in Napa, California, after a six-year battle with breast cancer, her husband, Jon Scott, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Lane joined the 1890s Western for the start of its retooled fifth season in September 1966 alongside two other new castmembers: Charles Bickford, who played her grandfather, John Grainger, the new owner of the Shiloh Ranch, and Don Quine, who portrayed her older brother, Stacey Grainger.
She appeared on 105 episodes of the Wyoming Territory-set series through March 1970, with James Drury‘s title character and Doug McClure’s Trampas looking after Elizabeth. The Virginian aired one final season without her.

There was a time in horror when a phone call was scarier than a knife. All it took to unnerve someone was a vague but menacing message delivered in a creepy voice. Killers throughout the genre have traditionally used telephones to intimidate their victims. Yet, what happens when the roles are reversed, and the villain […]

Based on Chris Bohjalian’s novel of the same name, “The Flight Attendant” follows the impulsive title airline employee Cassie (Kaley Cuoco) as she suddenly finds herself embroiled in a murder mystery, unsure of where she fits into the picture. Reckless and rash, she’s forced on the run from both the authorities and her own alcoholism-fueled trauma, which keeps resurfacing as she struggles to make sense of how her life careened so far off the runway.
Initially conceived as a limited series, the Emmy-winning show — also starring Zosia Mamet, Rosie Perez, Griffin Matthews and Deniz Akdeniz — will be back with a second season on April 21. Joining Season 2 as a new cast member is Sharon Stone, who will play Cassie’s estranged mother. In store is a new murder mystery with Cassie, now a civilian asset for the CIA, at its center. After a lengthy wait, fans of “The Flight Attendant” will finally get to board for Season 2. HBO Max announced that the hit series starring Kaley Cuoco is returning for new episodes beginning April 21. That makes “The Flight Attendant” Season 2 eligible at the 2022 Emmys.
It was November 2020 when “The Flight Attendant” made its debut, a surprise hit with audiences and critics that helped put HBO Max on the map with original content and went on to grab five Emmy nominations at the 2021 ceremony, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actress for Cuoco, Supporting Actress for Rosie Perez, Directing for Susanna Fogel (for “In Case of Emergency”), and Writing for creator and showrunner Steve Yockey (for “In Case of Emergency”).
Executive produced by Cuoco, the first season followed Cassie, an alcoholic and the flight attendant of the title, who wakes up in bed next to a dead body in a foreign country with no memory of what happened.

Call it now: “Succession” will win the DGA Award this year for drama. That’s because it’s the only nominee this year for drama: Five episodes of the series’ third season filled all five nominated slots for this year’s DGA Awards category for dramatic series.
The “Sucession” sweep comes as the Directors Guild of America has revealed this year’s TV nominees for its 74rd annual DGA Awards, including achievement in drama, comedy, limited/TV movie, variety, reality, children’s and commercials. Also announced on Wednesday were the nominees for this year’s directorial achievement in documentaries.
On the comedy side, “Ted Lasso” led with three of the five DGA Awards nominations in the category, along with episodes of “Hacks” and “The White Lotus” (which somehow landed in the comedy field there).
Last year, top TV prizes went to “Homeland” for drama series and “The Flight Attendant” for comedy series,...

Fret not, Comedy Series champion “Ted Lasso,” your losses in both writing and directing put you in very accomplished company, including three-time series victor “Veep.” Though our exclusive combined odds had the Apple TV+ series winning the directing prize for the Zach Braff-helmed episode “Biscuits” and the writing award for the “Pilot” penned by Jason Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, and Brendan Hunt, “Hacks” ultimately won both Writing and Directing for its pilot episode “There Is No Line” written by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky and directed by Aniello. Our readers ranked the episode second in writing and and third in directing, respectively.

From football (the actual footie kind) to monarchy to Michaela Coel, it was a great night to be British at the 2021 Emmy Awards.
Netflix had the biggest night of any streamer or network, with its Queen Elizabeth drama The Crown running a clean sweep of its categories and taking home seven awards. On the comedy side of things, Ted Lasso was nearly as dominant, winning nearly every award it was up for save for writing, directing, and lead actress in a comedy series (all three of which went to HBO Max’s Hacks). Mare of Easttown, I May Destroy You, and The Queen’s Gambit all split the limited series honors, with the Netflix chess series taking home the big prize.
It was a quiet ceremony for Marvel Studios, which was making its Primetime Emmy awards debut thanks to Disney+’s WandaVision. Though the series didn’t win any hardware Sunday night,...

The wait is finally over! The 2021 Emmy Awards, celebrating the year’s best television and a return to live events, are here. Acclaimed actors, directors, writers, producers and more assembled at L.A. Live’s Event Deck at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater on Sunday night.
Apple TV Plus’ “Ted Lasso” and HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” picked up the first awards of the night, each winning the pair of supporting acting prizes for a comedy and limited series, respectively.
Netflix’s “The Crown” dominated the drama fields, picking up prizes for supporting actress (Gillian Anderson), supporting actor (Tobias Menzies), writing (Peter Morgan) and directing (Jessica Hobbs).
“Hacks,” meanwhile, ruled the comedy fields. Jean Smart earned the fourth Emmy of her career for her role as stand-up comic Deborah Vance, and the HBO Max show took home the writing and directing for a comedy trophies.

The comedy directing and writing races at this year’s Emmys are among the competitive categories. For the last year three years in row, the winner of Best Comedy Series — “Schitt’s Creek”, “Fleabag” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” — has taken home these two awards as well. That streak could end this year.
“The Flight Attendant” pilot episode, “In Case of Emergency,” is tipped to win the helming prize for Susanna Fogel for its bold showcase of flashy, eccentric direction. But the HBO Max hit is unlikely to take home the series prize. It sits at third in our odds with none of our experts currently predicting a win.
The Comedy Series frontrunner is “Ted Lasso.” Could it pull off an upset in directing? Three of its episodes contend: “Biscuits” (2nd in our odds), “The Hope That Kills You” (4th) and “Make Rebecca Great Again” (5th). Surprisingly, the show did not submit its pilot.

One of the non-“Schitt’s Creek” losses that “Ted Lasso” suffered during the winter awards was at the Directors Guild of America Awards. The Apple TV+ hit lost the comedy series prize to “The Flight Attendant.” Will history repeat at the Emmys?
There are lots of similarities between the DGA race and the Emmy one. At DGA, two “Ted” episodes were nominated — “Biscuits” and “The Hope That Kills You — alongside “The Flight Attendant’s” pilot, “In Case of Emergency,” and two “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episodes, “The Surprise Party” and “The Spite Store.” That’s right, there was a double vote-split, paving the way for a “Flight Attendant” victory.
“Curb” is not Emmy-eligible, but the other three DGA nominees are up for the Emmy, along with a third “Ted” episode, “Make Rebecca Great Again.” At the moment, “In Case of Emergency,” directed by Susanna Fogel, is first in the odds, with “Bicuits,...

In an autumn when the pandemic continued to keep us in the doldrums of lockdown, along came Warner Bros TV/Max Original’s The Flight Attendant starring Kaley Cuoco with its exotic locales and comedic set-up of a first-class flight hostess, Cassie Bowen, who wakes up next to her one-night stand in Bangkok with his throat sliced.
After 279 episodes on The Big Bang Theory, knowing that Cuoco could deliver more high jinks was never a question. But she displayed sides in Flight Attendant we’d never seen before — from action spy star to emotional drama as a young woman battling alcoholism and trying to get a grip on her reality.
Even more than on camera, Cuoco flew the plane in developing Flight Attendant as executive producer. When she first optioned the book by Christopher A. Bohjalian for her Yes, Norman productions, her first response was “I don’t want it to be this dark.

Nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series along with eight other Emmys, HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant stars Kaley Cuoco as Cassie Bowden, a flight attendant with a drinking problem. Cuoco is nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category for her role.
The pilot episode, titled “In Case of Emergency,” is a nominee in the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series category. The episodes introduces Bowden as she wakes up in a hotel room in Thailand, hung over and next to a dead body. With no memory of the night before, she tries to piece together what happened.
Steve Yockey, the Emmy-nominated writer of the script, answers some questions about his work on the episode as part of Deadline’s It Starts on the Page, a series showcasing scripts from this year’s Emmy-nominated programs and the writers who brought them to life.
What was the inspiration for the series?...

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Kaley Cuoco is entering “The Flight Attendant” episode “In Case of Emergency” as her 2021 Emmy Awards submission for Best Comedy Actress. This program aired November 26 and was the first episode of the first season for the HBO Max show.
In this installment, flight attendant Cassie (Cuoco) gets drunk and has sex with a stranger but finds him dead in bed next to her the following morning. She doesn’t want to be arrested, so she cleans up everything and leaves. She can’t remember much of what happened when questioned by the FBI.

“Ted Lasso” cleaned up in the Emmy nominations when they were announced on July 13. It received 20 nominations, more than any other freshman comedy in history. Among those was for Zach Braff, who’s up for Best Comedy Directing for the episode “Biscuits.” This marks his first Emmy nomination since “Scrubs.” Can he win for his work behind the camera?
“Scrubs” never really got its due from the TV academy. Over the course of nine seasons it only won two Emmys, for picture editing in 2005 and sound mixing in 2007. At a time when we were all locked down during the pandemic, it was fun to revel in a jet-setting, high-stakes and hijinks world, and HBO Max’s freshman series The Flight Attendant delivered that and showed a Kaley Cuoco we’ve never seen before, able to play various shades in spades.
While Flight Attendant played like a James Bond girl in reverse spy comedy series, it also at its core dealt with the anguish and the morning after of alcoholism.
“In Case of Emergency” penned by creator Steve Yockey, is where Flight Attendant takes off. An adaptation of Chris Bohjalian’s novel, the series begins with Imperial Atlantic flight attendant Cassie Bowen, played by Cuoco, who sneaks a drink when she’s up in the air but parties hard when she’s on the ground. She connects with first-class passenger Alex Sokolov (Michiel Huisman) en route to Bangkok. He’s a mysterious,...

“We are about halfway through the writers’ room for season two,” reveals Steve Yockey about “The Flight Attendant,” which he developed for HBO Max. The co-showrunner of the thriller teases in his exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above), “I’ve always said I feel very strongly that if we were lucky enough to have a second season that it would be like a whole new movie, a whole new book — like a whole new ‘Cassie Bowden as the flight attendant’ and dropped into a new adventure, so it’s continuing Cassie’s emotional journey from season one in terms of her relationship to alcohol, but it’s a whole new case for her to get involved in and it’s a lot of fun. We’ll see Annie again; we’ll see Megan again; everyone else, I’ll keep my mouth closed about.”

Blake Neely might be the most prolific composer on television. A longtime collaborator of executive producer Greg Berlanti, he was behind the musical scores of “Batwoman,” “Blindspot,” “Connecting…,” “The Flash,” “Legends of Tomorrow,” “Riverdale” and “Supergirl” this season alone, as well as the Oscar-nominated Tom Hanks film “Greyhound.”
Neely should be phoning it in by now, but instead is earning particular praise for his work on the first season of “The Flight Attendant” on HBO Max. The “Piano for Dummies” author reveals in an exclusive interview (watch the video above), “It’s the first show that I’ve been working on where I actually am looking around my house thinking like, the dishwasher — I could probably play that; that bicycle I could probably play and incorporate it into the score, so that was really fun.”

“Oh my god, that’s something that I want — I want that.” This is the response that Cat Thomas hopes to inspire with the wardrobe of Kaley Cuoco‘s character Cassie Bowden in “The Flight Attendant” on HBO Max. The veteran costume designer, also known in the past for projects as Catherine Marie Thomas, explains in her exclusive interview with Gold Derby about the debut season of the dramedy (watch the video above), “I really like the fact that she felt like a grounded New York woman — someone that people related to and that’s why people were so attracted to her fashion and to her clothing because there was this realness about her.”

Grab your keys: HBO and HBO Max are leaning heavily into in-person drive-in events for their joint Emmy For Your Consideration campaign next month. Dubbed “HBO/HBO Max FYC Drive-In Theatre,” the pay cabler and its sister streamer will hold ten events between May 14 and May 21 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
This year’s Television Academy Emmy campaign rules focused on virtual panels and events, with one exception: Panels could also take place in a drive-in environment, as long as Covid-19 safety protocols are observed. Last week, NBCUniversal held the first drive-in screening of the season with an event for Bravo’s “Top Chef.”
In the case of the HBO/HBO Max events, Television Academy members will screen episodes and watch panel discussions about contenders while being fed and watching from their cars. Per HBO and HBO Max, “each event will have a branded red carpet photo opportunity for guests upon drive-in arrival,...

“The Flight Attendant” opens with a montage set to the song “Good Time Girl” by Sofi Tukker, but music supervisor Frankie Pine reveals in her exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above) that the show was supposed to open with star Kaley Cuoco singing a song herself.
She explains, “Oh gosh, it was at the beginning of the pilot episode! It was so great! It was a drunk karaoke scene where she was going to come in and rerecord ‘Call Your Girlfriend’ and I had her come into the recording studio — she’d never been in a recording studio before.” Pine continues, “She was a pro! Perfect, perfect drunk rendition of ‘Call Your Girlfriend’. I had wished we could put it in some kind of blooper reel.” A split-second shot appears during the montage; no Robyn songs ultimately appear in the first season of the HBO Max dramedy.

The 73rd annual Directors Guild of America Awards kicked off on Saturday evening. The awards honored the best directing in film and television of the past year.
This year, nominees Lee Isaac Chung for “Minari,” Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman,” David Fincher for “Mank,” Aaron Sorkin for “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland” vied for the top directorial prize for film, with Zhao winning.
On the TV side, “The Queen’s Gambit,” “Homeland,” and “The Flight Attendant” won the major prizes, shaking up the race as we head into Emmys season.
The DGA prize is often considered a bellwether for the Best Director Oscar. Recent DGA winners that went on to repeat at the Academy Awards include Alfonso Cuarón for “Roma,” Guillermo del Toro for “The Shape of Water,” Damien Chazelle for “La La Land,” and Alejandro G. Iñárritu for both “The Revenant” and “Birdman...

Chloé Zhao was named the best director of 2020 at the 73rd annual Directors Guild Awards, which were presented on Saturday in a virtual ceremony.
Zhao’s win for her quiet road film “Nomadland” makes her the second woman to win the DGA Award for feature film, after Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker” in 2010. Only 10 women have ever been nominated in the category, with this year marking the first time that two female directors were nominated in the category in one year. (The other was Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman.”)
The win for Zhao comes two weeks after “Nomaldland” also won the Producers Guild Award, making it the only film to win more than one prize from the four major guilds. “The Trial of the Chicago 7” won the Screen Actors Guild’s ensemble award, while “Promising Young Woman” and “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” won Writers Guild Awards. The Directors Guild of America (DGA) announced the television nominations for the 2020 DGA Awards on Monday, honoring “Ted Lasso,” “WandaVision,” and “The Queen’s Gambit” as examples of some of the finest directorial work that the medium has to offer.
Both Comedy and Drama categories saw complete turnover in nominees from 2019, with none of the series honored last year airing episodes during the window of eligibility in 2020. Therefore the celebration is guaranteed to get an injection of fresh blood, a welcome development with any awards body.
Curiously, the wide open field allowed for some surprising series to garner their first ever DGA nominations, including AMC’s “Better Call Saul” and Disney+’s “The Mandalorian.”
Also announced today were the DGA Award nominations for Documentary, including nods for “Boys State” and “The Truffle Hunters.”

Before the advent of cell phones, communication was so limited; you either had to telephone someone (on a landline no less), or god forbid, talk to them in person (brrr). Phones were also trotted out as a very effective trope for horror; the calls started coming from inside the house, pay phone booths were firing up, and prank calls led to all kinds of mayhem. That last ditty is where we’re headed today with I Saw What You Did (1988), an effective TV teen horror that is a remake of a same-named William Castle joint from ’65, this time co-headlined by a very young Shawnee Smith and Tammy Lauren.
Originally shown on May 20th as a CBS Friday Movie, I Saw was up against Mr. Belvedere on ABC and Miami Vice on NBC, but it held a unique appeal for teenage girls (or anyone else for that matter) looking for some thrills on a Friday night.

William Castle is a name synonymous with hucksterism and showmanship, more so than the quality of the films he directed. Which isn’t really fair, it’s just that his gimmicky pieces like The House on Haunted Hill and The Tingler (both 1959), with skeletons flying through the audience and buzzers placed under theatre seats respectively, overshadowed an unsubtle but solid directorial style when unburdened by showbiz trappings. Such is the case with The Night Walker (1964), a Robert Bloch (Psycho) scripted thriller that delves into the dream world in effective ways.
Released in late December by Universal, The Night Walker received some good notices but left audiences sleepy. Perhaps the perceived combination of shock master Bloch and schlock meister Castle didn’t match what made it to the screen; indeed it’s a different tale told in a different manner than either was used to telling, yet has a sometimes eerie...

On paper, it sounds simple: In Sunday’s episode of The Leftovers, Matt took off for Australia in hopes of returning Kevin to Miracle prior to the anniversary of the Sudden Departure. But in reality, the preacher’s endeavor was of course anything but simple, and came to involve a murder, a boatload of lion-worshiping sex fiends and a sit-down with God. And, let’s be honest, we fans of the HBO drama wouldn’t have had it any other way. Here’s how it all went down (under)…

Things got a little tense on Monday’s Dancing with the Stars.
“It needed more samba content in there. There was so much larking about,” judge Len Goodman said after Gleb Savchenko and Jana Kramer‘s 1970s -set samaba they’d been assigned for Eras Week on the ABC reality dance competition. “You know it’s the truth, Gleb.”
