Early responses are beginning to come in regarding the details of the Directors Guild of America’s deal with studios and streamers, which were revealed on Wednesday night.
Amid a Writers Guild of America strike, and as performers’ union SAG-AFTRA negotiates with entertainment companies represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers following its own strike authorization, the DGA reached a tentative pact it called “historic.” Some of its members aren’t so sure.
During a Zoom meeting to explain the deal to membership on Thursday, DGA leadership justified the timing of the pact, struck on June 3. “We went as late as one could go within our window” and negotiated for one day later than planned, one guild executive told The Hollywood Reporter, seemingly addressing criticism that the DGA pulled the trigger too quickly rather than holding out for more leverage.

Almost everyone can identify with the “make or break” moment in a relationship, which makes the new Netflix film “Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between” nearly universal in its potential reach — the film’s entire plot revolves around that crucial moment. And for stars Jordan Fisher and Talia Ryder, delving that deeply into a relationship’s breaking point meant they needed to get to know each other incredibly fast.
Based on the book by Jennifer E. Smith, the story chronicles Aidan (Fisher) and Claire’s (Ryder) last night together before Claire leaves for college the next day. The couple had originally begun their relationship with the understanding that they’d break up before heading into this next chapter, and on one last epic date, Aidan reminds Claire of all their special moments together, bringing them to revisit the highs and lows of their relationship. Earth, Wind & Fire was alternately singing about the 12th of never and the 21st night of September, but it was all about the 19th evening of June as the veteran group proved an obvious audience favorite during “Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom,” a multi-artist, multi-genre show at the Hollywood Bowl broadcast live on CNN Sunday to commemorate the national holiday.
Held to celebrate the anniversary of Black emancipation in the U.S., the concert spanned almost as wide an array of musical and performance styles as could be packed into a single prime-time slot, from soul to classical to country to jazz. That breadth established, the lineup had a special emphasis on artists that ruled the R&b world of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, leading an emcee to joke to the sold-out audience about a time “before all those knee replacements out there.”

Andie MacDowell revealed to Marie Claire that she suffered a panic attack on a set in 2016 after noticing the production was populated entirely by male cast and crew. The actor was the only woman on set at the time. MacDowell said the panic attack occurred shortly after Donald Trump got elected president, which didn’t help her emotional state on set.
“I had this kind of crazy experience, right after Trump got elected,” MacDowell said. “I was really disturbed that nobody seemed to care about the vagina[-grabbing] comment; I had gotten really sad. I went to do a job, a day’s work, and I had my very first panic attack. I was getting ready to shoot something, and I turn around and it’s, like, a roomful of men. Like, a sea of men. It flashed on something that was personal for me. And I dropped to my knees.

Sony ruled for another week as “Uncharted” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (both 19.99) each had #1 showings: The video game adaptation is #1 at iTunes and Vudu, while the massive Marvel hit took top spot at Google Play.
This reinforces the strategic wisdom of two Sony decisions: the extended theatrical window for both films (far longer than the now-standard 45 days) and relying on PVOD rather than the increasingly costly and competitive realm of in-house streaming. It also maintains flexibility, with the Marvel underachiever “Morbius” arriving on PVOD release May 17. Sony seems to key its releases to when theatrical viability wanes.
Tomorrow will see “The Lost City” (Paramount/19.99) on PVOD and Paramount+. As with “The Batman,” the studio’s PR announcement pushed streaming. The Sandra Bullock/Channing Tatum romantic adventure could make the 100 million domestic mark (94 million through the weekend), which can deotermine film rental settlements with theaters.

“I really grew up loving those summer teen movies where you could feel the weather or like you could feel the air conditioning was too cold,” Alvarez told TheWrap during an interview about her film adaptation, which she wrote and directed. “You could feel the humidity and smell the sunscreen through the screen and I just thought ‘Along for the Ride’ has the potential to be one of those summer movies.’”
“Along for the Ride” tells the story of Auden West (who is played in the film by Emma Pasarow), who is one summer away from heading to Defriese University. Auden’s parents split up when she was younger, and she lived with her mom (Andie MacDowell) through high school, but for the summer she decides to visit Colby,...

In the new Netflix feature film adaptation of “Along for the Ride,” based on the novel by author Sarah Dessen, stars Emma Pasarow and Belmont Cameli fell into a pretty natural rhythm of acting out their characters’ budding relationship. But one thing the actor and actress were not on the same page about was the food fight scene.
When Auden (Pasarow) meets Eli (Cameli), he proposes a quest of daring activities to Auden — especially things she’s never tried before — and one of the items on her list includes starting a food fight. Fast forward quite a bit, and Auden’s wish comes true, with a fun story behind the filming of the scene.
“The food fight was absolutely insane. We shot until the sun rose in the morning. For continuity purposes, for timing restrictions, we could only do one take of [Belmont] pouring the beans on my head,” Pasarow said...

For a certain subset of younger readers, bestselling author Sarah Dessen’s books — mostly sweet teen romances about nice kids working out their problems and falling in love in the process, typically set in and around Dessen’s adopted home state of North Carolina — are must-reads. For nearly three decades, Dessen has been churning out her novels to, if not always strong acclaim, at least good sales and a dedicated fanbase.
And yet, until Netflix picked up options for a trio of Dessen’s books back in 2019, the author’s back catalog of inoffensive charmers scarcely got the movie treatment. Back in 2003, two of her books were turned into the Mandy Moore vehicle “How to Deal,” but it’s taken almost two decades for Dessen to get another crack at the screen. Netflix, which has given new life to the exact kind of fare Dessen writes — from the darling to...

Fans of “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before,” beware. “Along for the Ride,” a new young adult film from writer-director Sofia Alvarez, is arriving on Netflix May 6, and the book-to-screen adaptation is one that definitely calls for a box of tissues.
The film stars Emma Pasarow as Auden, a recent high school graduate who is spending the summer visiting her dad and stepmom in the beach town of Colby, where she knows no one and is still dealing with the fallout from her parents’ divorce. She quickly makes a deep connection with Eli (Belmont Cameli), a fellow insomniac who shows Auden the joy she’s missing in her life on nightly escapades. And although she has a rough start making friends with the other girls in town — a pre-existing trio by the names of Leah (Genevieve Hannelius), Esther (Samia Finnerty) and Maggie (Laura Kariuki) — they eventually bond after putting...

A growing trend in Hollywood is seeing established musicians pivoting the world of film scores. Some of those high-profile examples are Radiohead‘s Jonny Greenwood (“The Power of The Dog“), Oingo Boingo‘s Danny Elfman (“Batman“), Devo‘s Mark Mothersbaugh (“Thor: Raganrok“), and, of course, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails.

Long-running indie duo Beach House — who released the sprawling 18-song double album, ‘Once Twice Melody,’ just a few weeks ago — are making their film-scoring debut with Netflix’s “Along for the Ride,” which is described in the announcement as “a sweet summer film based on the popular YA book by New York Times bestselling author Sarah Dessen.” The film arrives on Netflix on Friday.
Written and directed by Sofia Alvarez (who wrote the screenplay for both “To All the Boys I’ve Love Before” and its sequel), “Along for the Ride” tells the story of Auden (Emma Pasarow), who’s decided to spend her last summer before college in picturesque Colby Beach, according to the synopsis. While other teens party in the sun, loner Auden spends her time roaming the streets after everyone else is asleep. Everything changes when she meets Eli (Belmont Cameli), a charming and mysterious fellow insomniac.

As the undisputed king of streaming (for now at least), Netflix has enjoyed the presence of some major blockbusters. Now, with its list of new releases for May 2022, Netflix is bringing back one of its biggest ever hits.
Stranger Things season 4 “volume one” is set to premiere on May 27. It’s been a long wait for new episodes of this ’80s-tinged sci-fi/horror series and based on the trailers, the wait will have been well worth it. In this go-around, the kids of Hawkins (now high schoolers) will have to contend with the Upside Down once again to go along with the horrors of the Creel House.
While Stranger Things is the biggest Netflix original this month, it’s far from the only one. Mike Myers’ latest series The Pentaverate premieres on May 5 (fittingly: 5/5). Meanwhile The Lincoln Lawyer is set to arrive on May 13 followed by Love, Death & Robots Volume...

Netflix is adapting Sarah Dessen's New York Times bestseller "Along For the Ride." Starring Emma Pasarow and Belmont Cameli, the Sofia Alvarez-directed film centers around Pasarow's character, Auden, who meets the mysterious Eli (Cameli) the summer before going off to college. The two quickly form a bond through their shared insomnia, exploring the town of Colby under the cover of night.
"The book is a story about love; it's about friendship; it's about family; it's about discovering yourself at the beach; it's about trying new things and going on a quest," Pasarow tells Popsugar. "The movie is all of those things plus the most incredible soundtrack ever and score by Beach House."

Dermot Mulroney is set to star in the upcoming indie thriller “Breakwater.”
The veteran actor, of “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and “August: Osage County” fame, will team with writer-director James Rowe on the feature.
“Breakwater” will see Mulroney star as prison inmate Ray Childress, who charges a just-released fellow prisoner with finding his daughter. The ex-con soon discovers the daughter’s past may be more dangerous than anything he’s faced in prison.
“Dangerous charmers are a fixture in Southern stories,” Rowe said in a statement, “and Ray is a man whose surface cool masks a desperate volatility. Dermot’s appeal and his expansive range, along with his willingness to defy expectations, make him the ideal choice for this guy driven by conflicting impulses.”
Loose Cannon Pictures is producing the project, led by Matt Paul (the SXSW selection “Violet”). Larry Hummel and Edward Winters of Winterstone Pictures will also produce.
